Help Me Decide, MKV(5): .:R32, ED30 or GTI

Either way buy an ed30 or a r32

Ed30 is easily tuned to north of 300bhp and silly torque but the r32 is more of a cruiser and that exhaust note is something you will never get bored of.

Personal preference really both are great cars just depends what your looking for really

The ed30/Pirelli will hold their value better though any limited run golf does Christ guys are still paying 6k for mk4 annis wheras the equivilant car non limited edition is under 4k

And having bought a MkIV V6 2.8L 4motion today, I can vouch that you won't regret the engine note :D

They are great cars, very underrated. But a bit wallowy. Great engine note, lovely smooth pull, great motorway muncher and having needed it a couple of times the Haldex 4wd really does make you feel secure. It may wallow but it has great grip and reasonable power everywhere in the rev range.

Before I decided to keep my 4Mo and get a Corrado for fun I looked at R32's and considered a GTI. My heart said R32 but it is thirsty and I think values may suffer as petrol prices rise further. So if I were looking today then I would probably get either an ED30 or more likely a standard GTI and then remap it.

But I really would miss 4wd. It's great for putting the power down when accelerating hard.

that noise NEVER wears off :)
its also a nicer motorway wafter than a boosted 4pot
it is more thirsty aswell

Then boost the V6... problem solved :D

As you can tell (4Mo and Corrado VR6) I do like my 6 pots. There's something so intoxicating about the noise. I gave the VR6 some beans on a motorway slip road yesterday and my god it reminded me of why I love it. Huge smiles all round :)

70 mph in 6th on an r32 is around 2700 rpm at that rpm a stock r32 makes about 240 lb ft (which is intant with it being na) (that works out at 123 hp not that it means a thing)
i dont what rpm the gti and ed30 are doing but id guess at similer and youll be at or near peak torque but youll have throttle lag while you wait for the turbo to spool up

Seriously?

My 1.4 TFSI (only 122 bhp....) does 70 in 6th gear at like 2500 at the most. 90 in 6th is like 3000rpm.

I would have thought a R32 would have lower revs when cruising in 6th like 2000rpm on a motorway? :o

left lane at 70 wagon doing 55. big line of traffic in middle lane doin 70+.
you now have a choice
A wait for god knows how long for a gap big enough for you to get in without accelerating (which btw doesnt leave you long because youre gaining on the wagon at 15 mph)? or B accelerate into merge with middle lane traffic efortlessy and safely with a 3.2l vr6 up front?

This sounds like you are describing the car I am getting rid of this week - a 1.0 59hp 59lb/ft Micra. A Golf GTI would get in any gap. If you think a 200hp GTi doesn't have enough power then you haven't a clue what it is like to drive a turd car on the motorways! In fact the nackered old JCB Vetra I drove a few years ago had more than enough power to 'cope' with the motorway and that was a 118hp 1.9cdti.

But why would they give it ratios like that, surely it would be better to just have 6th gear as a motorway/cruising gear then an all out POWWWWWWWARRRRR gear?

I don't even..... especially when I made a post ages ago about the ratios on my mini being long eg 70 @ 3000rpm in 4th gear and yet no one believed me. So I give up.

Oh and no picture of a mates car! What do I win? :p

stop being a pedantic *disguise swearing and don't insult*

at 70 mph the torque will be similer between an ed30 and an r32 BUT you have to wait for it with the turbo motor wheras its instant with the vr6

Or option C - observe the road ahead, anticipate these conditions and plan your lane changing in advance so you're not landing on top of people at a 15mph closing speed needing to change lane still :p

Most of the times on an M road, middle and outside lane motorists are doing between 80 and 100. 70 is an ivelivent figure these days.

I would be happy with either two of the cars to be honest. I will look for both and when one comes up at the correct spec and price Ill view it.

However I am looking closer at .:R32. There is no denying it is a more exclusive car, last of the V6 hatchbacks and has a superb noise. Imagine sitting at lights in the GTI and an .:R32 pulls up, revs a a bit and you wish you bought that...

I recommend looking out for a golf with xenons, look so much better and light output is vastly improved. They can be retro fitted but I think you are looking at about £1k or maybe more to do so. :o

Also look out for the touch screen for media/sat nav etc...as well as multi function wheel, paddles on the wheel (dsg) etc. :)

Yeh, I know exactly what I'm looking for (spec wise), however, not to sure if to stick with good old manual or convert to DSG. So many horror stories of DSG going wrong and £2k to fix it.

I seem to recall that there are specialist companies that can fix the DSG for much much less now.

From what I remember it was the early dsg boxes that had the problem which the horror stories are about. I wouldn't worry about it tbh as its a very small percentage of cars which have had the issue. Just make sure you get the dsg oil serviced for peace of mind/warranty(?), you should be fine. :)
