What film did you watch last night?

Drive

An engaging alebit slow-burning bit of neon-noir filmmaking, constantly appealing to the eye, if not always the brain.

Very sparse dialogue compliments the sheer volume of eye-candy and the binary ultra-violence is genuinely suprising at times, constantly changing the pace of the film as it swerves between narratives of mob violence and gentil, blossoming romance.

An enjoyable electronic soundtrack rounded off the 80s feel throughout the film; driector Refn playing with the timeline in which this film is set by dothing his cap to similar films of the past, Taxi Driver and the not so distant No Country for Old Men.

8.5/10, and it will be watched again :)

Thank you very much,
That is very kind of you,
I do try my best.

:p

I heartily recommend Drive - don't let the shoddy television adverts deter you - it's very worthy of your attention, and in Blu-ray, was stunning :)

Real Steel.
7.5/10

I was very surprised at how good this was. I was expecting it to be terrible, but in the end it was very entertaining. I can see how an entire family could go watch this in the cinema on a Sunday and have an enjoyable time.

In a nutshell, I would say that the main robot was Rocky-esque (had a super strong jaw and was able to take a beating like no other).

They have setup a Rocky type sequel, where the crowd was won over in the final fight, just like Rocky.

The CGI was top notch. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a CGI character move so human-like. When the robot was fighting, at times I could swear blind that there was a human being inside the robot.

Real Steel ... can't beat a bit of Robo-ocky :)

Watched it a while back (hence quote) and completely agree :)

Aliens Special edition bluray - 9/10 - better than the theatrical
Aliens 3 Special Edition bluray 7/10 - Still my least favorite alien movie. But this is better than the theatrical release.
Aliens resurrection special edition bluray - 7/10
Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows bluray - 7/10 light action movie with excellent effects and music and very high sound production and i don't mind Robert Downey Jr.
Underworld awakening bluray - 7/10 - great on the bluray with all the action scenes :D

I got some old movies on bluray as well. I rewatched all four of the xmen on bluray this past week while i was off.

xmen 1 and 2 were the best imo with the last stand being the worst out of the four.

Haywire

Ooomph! How to make a Jason Bourne-esque movie without the nauseating shooting style? Do it like Soderbergh.

This film was very raw and very stylish. I loved the gritty fight and chase sequences.

I felt the story was a let down, the writing was beautifully blunt, but the story was lacking something. In the same boat, there were a few scenes that I felt could have been better developed in front of the camera.

Overall? Pretty awesome, I loved the entire style here at play here and it was a VERY refreshing break from the utter frenzied pace of action-movies through the past 10-15 years.

3/5 stars

The Hunger Games

I haven't read any of the books so the only exposure I'd had to this previously was the trailer which I saw a while back. I must say I felt the trailer spoilt certain parts of the story, and I think the age rating held the film back as well. Graphic violence isn't the be all and end all but in a movie such as this, based in a violent game where the sole aim is to be the last person standing it just felt really watered down. I was watching the movie, trying not to compare it to Battle Royale but to me it just felt like the kids version of that, with a cheesy love story tacked over the top.

The books are probably much better, the movie was disappointing though, the lack of gore killed it for me, the other competitors being killed felt very rushed, the emphasis on actual survival, gathering food and water for example was virtually non-existent save for a few very short scenes. The boy was supposed to have super-strength but I can't recall him showing this during the actual games at any point, quite contrarily he was an absolute pansy! I also hated the ending, if they turn it into a good series of films I'll be amazed. It needs a more mature rating so that they can make it into the film that it's meant to be.

I'd give it a 5/10 purely because it felt rushed and watered down.

Sucker Punch.

There was a story to it...I'm pretty sure there was, its just...I was distracted throughout the film by sexy scantily clad women with guns fighting :D

Hugo - Martin Scorsese directs this story about an orphaned boy living in a Paris train station in the 1930s. Whilst it looked amazing and featured fine actors and had some very nice clips/history of early cinema it didn't really grab me. 3/5
