Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th April - 2nd May 2012]

Fergie thinks there's no value in the market any more, shame he can't spend £20m on the likes of Nani and Anderson and £30m on Berbatov any longer, such good value!

Also Fergie said there is no value in the Jan transfer market, yet bought Vidic in January :D

dm look its a home game. the odds tell the story.

you'd always back the better team to win a home game surely? im not gutted that we lost the game. well okay i am, but i never expected US to win.

the truth is we should have put it to bed before now. all we had to do was win our home games where we were the heavy favourites and this fixture would have been meaningless.

lets not disguise the way we have played for 75% of the season i.e poorly but scraping results.

Wigan went almost full on attack against, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle..... people who go to win, frequently win, those that go to not lose, almost always lose, its a horrifically poor tactic, not least because its like the manager saying to the players "you can't win, try your best not to lose". Winners rarely if ever go with such a tactic, you can fluke a few random results with that kind of setup but 9/10 times you'd lose.

Wigan are doing it less because its their normal tactic and more because they had little other choice. Utd should be doing it as standard, how many times when Arsenal were really at their best from 97-2005, did Utd go to Arsenal to not lose.... how many times did they beat a rival team that was fully capable of winning the title, multiple times.

Was at the game last night and what a great atmosphere. No guesses for who I support. I thought some of the lads really showed their class and pedigree in what was a nervous and awkward match at times. Personal opinion Fergie got it wrong by not playing pacey in form wingers, that would have forced the City full backs in to position rather than the freedom they got.

People can complain about buying success, which is true to an extent, but I don't think you would be complaining if it was your club that got a massive investment and was treating you to sensational football at a reasonable price. Season Card was £405 this year.

Having been a season ticket(card) holder for the past 20 years I've done my time. Going to places like the McAlpine Stadium as it was and watching some truly poor players like Lee Bradbury and Michael Fontzeck.

Still two important and tough matches to go before I get too excited (it is City after all expect the unexpected), but happy to have done the double over United in the league.

A very proud City supporter.

p.s. was good to see there was little to no trouble at the game (apart from Mancini and Fergie! :) ) and no unnecessary and inexcusable chants about footballing tragedies.

You should post a bit more, there are no other City fans here who actually post and a bit of balance is nice! :p

He has a point though. Generally prices are overinflated in January and most of the players United would go for wouldn't be able to play in the champions league. That isn't to say you won't find any good deals. Vidic has been one the best signings Ferguson has made.

i think as a club who aspires to be the best that looking for value isn't what we should be doing. we should be looking for quality, someone who can make a difference not simply balance the books or open up opportunities in an asian market...

That's one of the major reasons we have Park. :(

This

That £80 million pounds we got from Ronaldo, should have, in my opinion, been spent on two absolutely world class players.

Are you suggesting Nani wasn't worth the money we paid for him?

It's a lot of money and he's had one good season imo, doesn't even get picked any more. There are very few clubs who can afford to keep a £20m player on the bench, depends how much you value £20m, it's easy come, easy go at Man Utd I guess

edit - didn't know he'd played over 30 games this season, doubt many have been full games though

You really do look forward to these days don't you Nick? I can almost imagine you rocking away in a chair during the good spells irate that you cant complain just longing for the day when the club lose a big game so that you can explode into a joy of ecstasy :o

Nani's been injured more or less since we played your lot, that's why he hasn't been in the team recently. I agree he hasn't been as good this season as he was last but to say he hasn't been worth the money paid I cant understand, he's easily one of the best wingers in the league and at his best the best winger in our side.

Fair enough, didn't know about the injuries, Nani is close, the other two are wastes.

It wasn't a serious post in the first place tbh!

I agree about the other two, Berbatov needs to go play someone to see out the rest of his career and Anderson is just pointless. Seriously no point in him whatsoever. May as well retire and go back to Brazil, get fat and hang out with Ronaldo (the first one)

interesting you say this in one post and then **** anderson off in the next. have you seen falcao this season, the one he smashed in off the inside of the bar in europe a couple of weeks ago. yes i was jealous. then i saw welbeck warming up and the jealousy turned into frustration very quickly. btw we have lost more then one big game.

The bottom line, and what I think Nick is getting at, is that our current team needs to be improved by some of the excellent talent available worldwide. Preferably before it's too late.

He's right in that where we could have Cavani/Falcao and other such players, we're relying on Welbeck to learn his trade and catch up to them. At what cost will that come? He can't be doing that while Man City just get stronger and stomp their way through the league.

However, I think we are all losing sight of the fact that, despite all this, we're level on points with them and we're missing Vidic. Though a lot of that has come down to luck in my opinion at times and at Wigan and against Everton it ran out.

It's not as if City are going to get worse either, Mancini is learning and clearly wants to improve their squad some more. We need to as well.

The problem is it's living in cloud cuckoo to think like that, he says we should have signed Aguero, Aguero cost City £38m, name me a club that isn't City, Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid who are able to spent that kind of money on one player? People need to realise that in some case you just cant compete (we should be thankful that we're in the position we are able to spend as much as we do in the first place tbh).
For the record Falcao cost €40m which I believe is just over £30m so again we're talking about a sizeable amount of money for just one player and for all this talk of these big money strikers that we should have signed how many goals more have City scored than us in the PL? Two. If the title is lost on GD then it's the goals we've let in that have hurt us more and like you say we've been without our best defender for more or less the entire season.

Spending upwards on 30m this summer or another striker would be the wrong thing to do and that's why I'm not particularly interested in all this talk of Eden Hazard, we failed to match City in midfield last night and that's where we need to address things not on another wingers or any more strikers.

That was just an example though, you can apply the same logic to the midfield. I hope that's what happens anyway!

We're not far away from not only being right up there in the PL (we are still level on points with 1st place after all) but also in Europe, centre midfield has to be the priority but it's going to be tough trying to compete with the teams I mentioned before if we're all going for the same players (like Martinez) and it might well take a couple of years, like when Chelsea first came into money before we have a free shot at the players we want....
