Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th April - 2nd May 2012]

Wow, didn't realise Park had gotten this pointless, from 365

Seriously, 3-4 years ago Park was almost half decent as a Fletcher style "go irritate the opposition" as opposed to actually being, you know, good at football. I'm sure there was a time where dropping an offensive player for Park in a difficult game worked, but if it hadn't worked all season, and really for at least two seasons, surely that makes it one of the single most ridiculous decisions Fergie had ever made.

Because Fergie isnt the man he was either.

Young Fergie would have no problem ending a guys career at the club because he just wasnt cutting it anymore.

Park has been utterly pointless as a player almost since day one, he has a woeful strike rate, his pass completion percentage is usually the lowest in the side, as well as the lowest amount of attempted passes in the side and he cant cross, or tackle.
And as he's got older and his stamina has declined, he is offering us nothing at all.

BBC Sport said:
Oasis singer and Man City fan Liam Gallagher burst into the media room after Mancini had given his post-match observations and said: "I love Mancini, he is nearly as cool as me".

Brilliant :D

fergie time to go i reckon. he needs to do a pep and try to walk away with a shred of dignity and his head held high.

i know a lot of people just like to flat out rebuke what i say out of hand. but you know I've been calling Jones carp at anything remotely talent requiring. i said it was mad of man u and England to play him in midfield, because his skill is just too low. no first touch, bad passing. his energy is what makes him capture the eye. not his ability.

Alex Ferguson drops Howard Webb for crucial derby match

Alex Ferguson has controversially dropped talismanic referee Howard Webb from Man Utd’s starting 12 for the crucial Premier League clash with Man City, and will instead hand a start to Andre Marriner.

Early reports indicated that crowd favourite Webb would line up for the league leaders, but news has now surfaced that Ferguson is to take a gamble on Marriner.

Marriner, who has only made 3 starts for Man Utd this season, is a surprise selection by Ferguson, given Webb’s ability to pull highly contentious decisions out of the bag in big matches.

“Webby has put in some great performances for us in the past, but I feel the expectation levels of supporters could be too much for him on this occasion,” revealed Ferguson.

“I might put him on the bench as an impact referee in case we need one of their players sending off or a penalty deep into stoppage time.”

The news of Marriner’s inclusion has left United fans miffed given Ferguson’s criticism of his performance in a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in 2009.

“It doesn’t make any sense not to include Webbo,” said avid fan John Henderson, who has lived in Plymouth all his life and whose only connection with Manchester is that he once voted for Bez when he was on Celebrity Big Brother.

“In games like this you want your best performers on the pitch, and Webbsio pulling the strings is as good as going into the game with a two-nil lead.”

“I hope that Ferguson has seen something in Marriner in training that suggests he can rise to the occasion.”

“If City have still got eleven men on the pitch at half-time then I’ll be singing Webbsyio’s name.”

“I’ll be singing it at the TV, but rest assured that the wife will be left in no doubt about how angry I am.”

:p

Yup, I've said the same many times about both Wenger and Fergie, there are upsides to a long term manager, and downsides. To a degree Wenger and Fergie are essentially too sentimental, they won't ditch a player now, when years ago they'd have cut them in a second.

Wenger was all too happen to sell Petit and Overmars, when both players were at their peak, because it was too good a deal to turn down. It was the current "Newcastle" way, sell when you get a great offer, buy great value players instead.

Park should have gone years ago, for me he was never a good player anyway. As I've said about Hernandez and the like, Utd don't need to buy a "workhorse" player, they can afford and can attract a great player who also works hard defensively. Young is great defensively, Utd seem to play better and win more with Young playing than without. Considering his work rate and how weak Evra is, it works much better, Park isn't remotely good enough to cover for how rubbish Evra is.

I don't care if Arsenal go through dozens of cheap **** players finding a good one, I'd prefer to actually get rid of players we KNOW aren't good enough and at least be trying to find better players, than to settle for guys like Diaby/Denilson.

likewise its not that Fergie had to have found some fantastic buy, but had he got shot of Park years ago and had been trying to find a better player, well that for me is the difference between a manager doing his job, and one not doing it properly.

I've also said for a long time, every team, without fail can carry one/two guys who don't perform well and still win big games, when you start approaching 3 or 4 players, it becomes incredibly hard, if its more than that, you're boned. Last night you were looking at Evra, Park, Giggs, Rooney all being mostly rubbish Nani, Jones, Smalling, Scholes weren't particularly good.

I don't think Silva, nor Barry had good games, but most of everyone else did and a few guys, Clichy, Toure(when he wasn't flat out on the floor looking unconscious) and Kompany were brilliant.

Young/Valencia might not of been enough, but both would have been more effective defensively, and more effective offensively.

I find it funny when Man Utd got owned by Barca and said we need to rebuild, Jones/Young and now they are saying the same after City have over taken them in the league, christ they have not even won the league yet.

One thing is for sure, City are going to dominate for a few season, the team have improved so much.

i find it funny when people tried to defend fergie, his transfers, his team selection and tactics. despite the obvious evidence from our performances some fans thought we were doing well.

and that's after we lost to ajax, bilbao etc at home. bejesus.

The problem is that any midfielder that would improve United will immediately be on the radar of Chelsea, City, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Bar Barcelona, we can't compete financially with any of those teams. I think we ought to try to sign Modric, but inevitably we'll be outbid by one of the above teams.

:( My heart is bleeding, the team with £30m + £100k p/w Berbatov sat on the bench can't afford to compete with the nasty oil boys

That must be really hard for you

So true.

Rooney wasn't it, wanted £160k a week or he would leave, said the team was not going any where and not investing, lol at him, out of every cup competition and the EPL is out of there hands.

It's not out of their hands. They could win their last two games 8-0! :):):)

It's the same on here every single year. Same faces writing off their own team after a bad start, only for fergie to get them to kick on to the title.

Then they wrote off the league this year only to end up 8 points clear. Even now after a loss to city they look far more likely to get the 2 wins, I bet City only get a win and a draw.

I've never known a bunch that have won so much have fans give up and get negative so quickly. I think fergie has done an awesome job with the players he has had for the last 2 or 3 years. If the players were available for the price the club would find acceptable I'm sure he would have bought them like he has before. I think he's doen great in the league the last few years, in Europe he's always been a tactical numpty but on the home front few can touch him.

Park doesn't even have the energy he did. He's literally just a passenger in every way now. Fergie is a fool to keep playing him.

My other half was entertaining me with some football stats last night and said of the 8 games Park has started, you've lost 6 of them?!

So why not do the old buy and loan back for a season?

Great theory but I'm not sure things like that are as straight forward as they sound. Would have Jones wanted to stay at Blackburn for another year or would have Blackburn wanted to develope somebody elses player when they could bring somebody else in?

Was at the game last night and what a great atmosphere. No guesses for who I support. I thought some of the lads really showed their class and pedigree in what was a nervous and awkward match at times. Personal opinion Fergie got it wrong by not playing pacey in form wingers, that would have forced the City full backs in to position rather than the freedom they got.

People can complain about buying success, which is true to an extent, but I don't think you would be complaining if it was your club that got a massive investment and was treating you to sensational football at a reasonable price. Season Card was £405 this year.

Having been a season ticket(card) holder for the past 20 years I've done my time. Going to places like the McAlpine Stadium as it was and watching some truly poor players like Lee Bradbury and Michael Fontzeck.

Still two important and tough matches to go before I get too excited (it is City after all expect the unexpected), but happy to have done the double over United in the league.

A very proud City supporter.

p.s. was good to see there was little to no trouble at the game (apart from Mancini and Fergie! :) ) and no unnecessary and inexcusable chants about footballing tragedies.

Ive actually never seen Fergie as exacerbated as ive seen him on the touchline this season. Never so frustrated, upset and utterly unable to do anything to fix it.

Not on one occasion but on many occasions.

The team isnt as good as it should be. The performances are not as good as they should be, for me it comes down to the personnel and the set up.

Watch city last night, 2 up front, dominated the chances, didnt resort to hoofing the ball just about anywhere.

When they did get the ball they had players who could easily take on a man, thus creating space in front of them to move into. Look at how many times they literally walked into our box to deliver a whipped in low ball, or a shot. Even if some were grossly wasted/well defended.

This contrasts to UTDs hit them on the break, get it to the overlapping fullback and pray that he crosses a decent cross to our sole striker who is about 5ft 9, compared to Kompany and Co's 6ft odd.

Clearly the tactic did not work, we created next to no decent chances. Having more midfielders than they did we should have actually controlled the game. As it happened we barely got a look in the game. This means the tactic was either really poor or the players werent good enough to play that tactic.

Both are a direct result of the manager, he brought in the players, he instigates the tactics.

We never looked like winning the game, let alone getting a goal. In truth we were lucky that City squandered so many chances. The scoreline actually flattered UTD slightly, as above the result could have been much worse.
