You can switch back though and make an EU one no problem.

10: 22 a.m. PDT- We are in the process of performing an emergency maintenance for all Diablo III servers to resolve several issues that are currently impacting the game. This maintenance may cause some interruption in communication, ability to log in, use of in-game features, and disconnections. We anticipate all servers will be available for play in approximately 1 hour.

you can change just be aware that that you may not be able to play when the US servers are on maintenance
so like in WoW eu servers tend to have there maintenance on a wednesday morning while the US servers will have there maintenance on a tuesday morning

luckily since launch time havent had one issue loggin in or with disconnects, obvious question but those having issues have set their region to europe right :/
On a seperate note got my first rare (yellow) item today, only to realise when talking to a mate that they aint so rare afterall seeing he had a shed load of em lol

so the open beta stress test was clearly useful then, they clearly learnt a lot from it.
Skype, free to use, good quality calls and a nice contacts list
