I slow down to try to let people pass... Sometimes I tap the brakes to scare them off, though my wife has had someone road rage at her and come up and bang on her window and mouth off at the next set of lights for doing this.

I'd rather be a moron who boots it occasionally in a fast car whilst driving safely, than a chode in a Vauxhall Astra 1.7 diesel who drive 3.5 inches from the person in front who is doing the speed limit through villages/towns.
It annoys me because you know that if something ran out in front of you and you had to do an emergency stop, with good brakes and good tyres, you'd stop on a knife edge. However the **** behind you with Lingwang tyres would be still travelling at 30mph when they hit you. Not only that, but the idiot who tail gates distracts me as i'm watching what he's doing.

Me to. Some of the speed bumps round here are shocking, especially the pointed corner ones! I have to slow to below 10MPH.
We have a woman at work who finds it a good idea to be about 2 feet behind the car in front(which on ocassions is me) I really don't know how she hasn't had an accident yet. I really don't know why people do it, i personally don't feel comfortable at all driving so close to somebody.
I'm surprised it took that for you to realise brake testing people isn't a great idea.

Usually I just leave a larger gap than usual to the car in front and carry on or if possible let them past.
I'm surprised it took that for you to realise that the world contains retards who, when driving so badly that brake testing impacts them, will actually approach you and claim it is your fault, rather than realising they are the uneducated scum of the universe, deserving of pain and death, and that they are carrearing towards the day when they come up against someone who isn't intimidated and will deservedly have their teeth removed against thier own bumpers.

Again though, why he wouldn't overtake is a mystery, usually the ones on your bumper are eager to overtake as soon as they get the chance.

Not a lot you can do really. If your doing the speed limit and it's a single carriage way just ignore them.
Having power on tap I have to resist the urge to boot it and create a gap, but they never get the hint and eventually come back to 2" behind you.

TBH i's be worried that the OP was going to speed up as soon as I tried to overtake (no slight meant on the OP but have seen it far too many times when overtaking)
In the scenario the OP describes, if he has to perform an emergency stop at 60, he IS going to get rear ended. At 30, the risk is massivley reduced, both of the accident happening and the damage taken if it does.
So, basically, refusing to accept the risk of a very serious accident, a risk that someone else is causing, in order to travel faster is disgusting behavior? Remind me never to get in a car with you...

Yes it is disgusting behaviour, which is punishable here (wonder if there's a similar law in the UK) with ''article 5'' ( hindering traffic ) and people with extreme low speeds like this have been fined or even lost their license before for causing danger. You could also easily consider 30@ 60mph as provocation. Others don't expect people to do 30 mph in a 60 mph zone.

The very name "emergency" implies it's not an everyday occurrence, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't drive in a way which takes into account the possibility.
Also, if the chance of having to do an emergency stop is so slight (as you seem to be implying), why are we taught to always keep a safe distance and why are there so many instances of cars being rear-ended? I'd rather **** off some idiot who can't drive than risk an accident resulting in guaranteed increased insurance premiums, and potential injury.
I'd also imagine the idiot driving inches off your bumper would be far more likely to be punished than you would for maintaining a safe speed for the conditions.

)The point, as said, is that you don't know when you'll have to do an emergency stop. You don't get in the car thinking "I'll have to do an emergency stop today when a fridge falls off an overpass, so I'd better be driving carefully in readiness for that."
