Varys actually warned against opening the gates, it was grandmaester Pycelle who persuaded Aerys because he is a Lannister loyalist.

Yes, you're right. My mistake. It's a year since I read the books, and my memory isn't what it used to be!

Duffman I really think you should edit out those last comments.
Leave the theories and conjecture to for book thread unless you want a suspension

Done. Since it was a mixture of backstory and pure speculation on my part (i.e. not something from the books) I didn't think it would be an issue. No different to speculating where the story will go in the future, or what might happen in the next episode. But nevermind...

Just to be clear: We can't speculate on what will happen next?

Oh good. So speculating on the TV show is banned now too? How thrilling this thread will be...

Some people need to get a grip.

It depends who's speculating. If you've read the books it's quite hard to speculate without using the knowledge you have about the books.

Well not really, you already know what should happen.
So anything you post is likely a spoiler.

My speculation was based entirely on the events of the first two or three episodes of series one [or alternatively the first few chapters of the first book].

Similarly, the back-story I gave was all from material already covered (and was specifically asked for by desires).

I don't want to upset anyone though, so I shall extricate myself from the thread. No good deed... :p

Your reply doesn't really make any sense to the answer I gave your question, since your question was about what happens next.

However, I disagree with your opinion about the speculation (your justification)

The rightful heir is Stannis.

Tommen isn't a Baratheon.

However, since Joff is the king (Even though pretty much everyone I believe knows he's born of incest) in his death, it'd make Tommen king.

GOT knowledge in depth, I was going to post a link to the Southpark show where Mr/Mrs Garrison was giving a lesson on the ruling houses of Westeros just like when I was learning about the Tudors and the Stuarts, I did a thread search for Southpark and got no hits.

However when I searched YT there were loads of examples so it looks like the Southpark gang like GOT, I recommend a YT search for Southpark Game of Thrones.

That's not at all what I said.

Speculation on the show is fine, I think, but what he had said was borderline spolierish from the books.

I had no problem with the Westeros history lesson, just the bit after that which was better suited to the book discussion thread imo

Look, I'm not going to argue the toss, but I explicitly stated that it was 100% speculation on my part - therefore I don't see how it could have been a spoiler of any kind

Besides, I don't really want to visit the "book thread", as I haven't read all the books, and it is (I assume) full of spoilers.

Either we're allowed to speculate on what's going to happen (avoiding any reference to things that haven't happened yet of course), or we aren't. It seems that people don't want any speculation, so I guess that's fine (though it's a little odd for a thread on a TV show).

You want to avoid things that haven't happened, and speculate on things that might happen?

Judging by the name of the final episode, it's definitely going to contain one of the major important plot developments I wanted to see this season.

Really liked the first season, it was damn close to the book. I've read the books to about half way through the third. They have have really butchered the story this season. But episode nine was was quite close to the books at last. The green flame explosion was awesome.

Yeah, the names of the episodes really annoy me sometimes. I ignore them as best I can. I also really don't get the people that watch the 'next episode' things HBO put out on youtube.

Whose chapter was it in the books? Tyrions? Or was it more than one chapter?

Although i'm on the most recent book, I try not to watch any GOT trailers as the series is deviating enough for some events to still surprise me, plus i've forgotten a lot as well.

The moment with Tyrion and the goldcloak last night had my jaw on the floor, I knew it happened but had forgotten all about it. My girlfriend was really depressed, she's under the impression he's dead ;) Who am I to ruin the next episode for her :D

Or all of us right now, eh? Or was that just a wink that you know, rather than telling us he's alive?
