My brother just finished uni and the lucky bugger has a job lined up. With him looking to buy his first car he's looking for suggestions.

SPECIFICS (soft requirements, they can change... so allow a little play)
Type: ideally a large frame, comfortable interior and powerful but engine must be smaller than a 2L
His Use: 6000 miles/year
Insurance: Mom's car for 4 years... so only ncb
Running Cost: absolute max of £600 per month
Budget: £2,700
Max Insurance Cost: £2000 (paying in one lump sum to save £400 but an engine larger than 2L causes his insurance cover to go over £2K)
Vehicle Age: Above 2006

So what would you get?

i'd imagine having just finished uni he will be of an age to get cheap(er) insurance

look at classics for bang for buck and cheap to insure shenanigans.

something like an early 300zx TT if he really wants to go nuts or alternatively a nice 328 bmw or a 200zx or a pulsar or anyone of eleventy billion fun fast cars that will be super fun and super quick and probably empty his wallet faster than anyone woman could :)

My brother just finished up at uni last week and he's looking at buying a car now. Just wondered what you lads would suggest.

He's after something big, powerful and fun instead of efficient. He's living close to his new job (working at a pharmacy after graduating in Pharmacology) so shouldn't be too worried about petrol. With him driving my Mom's car under her insurance for 4 years, I'm guessing this would still only qualify as his first car (dunno).

For £2,700 what would you suggest as a good fit?

I would suggest getting something very normal/basic for now and after a couple of years get something powerful.

A bit off topic but is he a fully qualified pharmacist? If so then I would wait, they have quite a high starting salary so he will be able to afford something quite decent. :)

Big and powerful with 2.7k?

Some kind of classic scooby is the only thing i would be interested in at that price that is big and powerful.

The big and powerful is going to be hard to insure sensibly with no no claims IMO . Depending on his age .

The fun and fast bit could be easily done though

At £600 a month running costs I would be taking out a personal loan to buy something better than a £3k car. I really wouldn't want to spend twice a cars value in one year to run it.

£227 to borrow 7.5k over 3 years, giving £10k to buy a car, and plenty to run/insure it.

A friend of a friend recently bought a 1998 328i for £1750. His justification was that as it was the top model (and afaik every option) then it won't be owned by retards. I haven't seen it in person yet but from photos it looks in amazing nick and the design has aged very well. Perhaps go for something like that? You may need to look at a few as for a 14 year old car there can be many different interpretations of 'good condition'.

If he's got £600 to potentially sink into a car every month, then my advice would be simple - get a banger for a year, save most of that £600, and get something nice in 12 months time!

He's looking at 6000 miles a year and he's Indian... we don't do loans. :)

I guarantee he will be saving for a better car but doesn't change the fact that he would like something fun for the time being.

Can he not just save? If i had £600 to just blow on nothing i would be in a rate beast.

Focus RS, Mustang etc.... God i wish i still lived at mummys house lol.

Tell me about it. No bills, no living costs, just money falling from trees.

He isnt a fully qualified Pharmacist yet, his new job will be at Boots and he'll be there for a few years before he becomes truly qualified.
