3D is overrated

Well, what do you want? It doesn't add immersion and is invariably distracting. The picture quality is diminished because the image is darker. I note that you appear to have said that this is due to poor calibration - guess what, I don't care that theatres can't set up a 3D film properly when they manage just fine with 2D.

Well quite a few cinemas even struggle to setup a 2D film correctly... :o

A properly setup home cinema doesn't really suffer much from brightness loss as you can compensate with backlight settings.

Whoa, Internet badass over here. 59 posts in a year and you crawl out from under your rock to defend 3D? Best of luck making your mark.

Bizarre... so because you're sadder than him, your opinion is more worthwhile?

Literally just got back from prometheus

I love 3d, it's more enjoyable, if you are going to over analyse a film, storyline etc why go IMO

I've seen a fair few 3d films here's my ranking

Prometheus imax
Avatar
Tron imax
Avengers
Resident evil.. Terrible

Prometheus got it spot on, 3d was there but the film wasn't about 3d, the opening scenes were amazing! IMAX btw, avatar was animated and again awesome but in a different way, then you have resident evil, will say no more

Have a 3d tv gt30, hooked up to a Htpc, all I have watched is avatar, looks amazing. I've upscale f1 games, love it. Yeah it might reduce brightness, especially when converting but you know what? I ENJOY it, I don't over analyse it.

Luckily I don't get headaches and like wearing glasses, doesn't bother me at all

As someone who already wears glasses I'll like 3D when I don't have to wear another pair on top of the ones I'm already wearing. :(

People wishing it would die a death...why exactly, when you can just go and see it in 2D instead?

Because generally directors crowbar in ridiculous scenes to make 3d 'work' and it's completely obvious. Ohhh, look, something coming out of the screen at you, yaaaaaawn. Ok a film like Prometheus didn't appear to go down that route but other than a couple of scenes it was completly superfluous to the film and just reduced the visual quality. On top of which we are now seeing the system falsifying 3d viewing numbers by holding back the 2d releases until after release day.

Until 3d is completely transparent to the viewer ie; no glasses it'll remain a gimmick so far as I am concerned and I hop with a passion that it does die a death like every iteration before it.

Those films tend to be the **** ones like Piranha 3D etc., and as you say the good ones like Prometheus tend not to bother with those shenanigans. So, it still shouldn't really bother you, unless you like seeing **** films.

Having seen Avatar in both 2D and 3D, the 3D added a lot to my experience of the film, which for me shows the potential for 3D to be great, even if not everyone does it successfully and it has room for improvement.

Luckily I don't suffer from eye strain or headaches in 3D movies so maybe my view is more favourable because of that.

I just find it strange that people would wish it gone rather than wish it better. Wishing it gone in its current guise is one thing, but to say 3D has no place in cinema, ever, makes people sound like luddites to me, even if that comment does get me labelled an internet badass by some angry drunkard with an illegal signature.

I don't like 3D, I don't see the appeal and it always gives me terrible eyestrain and headaches.

Also I saw Avatar in 3d and it was still a Meh movie, the 3d effects did little to help, and in most cases it just seems pointless.

I like 3D but it's not convenient when you wear glasses already
Also after a while I get headaches so a 90minutes film is the maximum I can take

3D without glasses is the way to go !

You have 2 sets who don't like 3d

The quality crowd
The discomfort crowd

Amazing how many people don't like the glasses. I really don't even know I'm wearing them. The 'look its 3d' scenes I don't like, didn't like the 3d spiderman trailer, lots of negative blacks

For me the clarity loss is more than made up for with depth, i enjoy it more, but again, I go to see films that are entertaining.

How can it be an afterthought if the entire movie was filmed with actual 3D camera's and not post-processed 3D?!?

Fair enough - my bad - but I still don't think it worked particuarly well.

There's moments where, for example where I found the extreme depth of field you get was making it difficult for me to focus on the subject. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it's like a distraction. I don't know whether it was to do with the fact I saw it on the Waterloo IMAX screen or what but my friend who came with me thought the same.

My only complaint...I repeat ONLY complaint about 3D is flying vehicles, they never seem to look quite right, just look too small, noticed it first the Resident Evil and with the ship in Prometheus.

3D is very much overrated. I personally think that it's a load of rubbish and brings nothing to a film. In fact, it takes away more than it tries to offer.

I don't know how many threads I've had to say this in now.... 3D is not darker.

Yes it's suddenly brighter if you take your glasses off, but there is a specific grade created for the 3D version of the film to match the 2D grade while wearing glasses.

Film buffs seem to think they appear more intelligent by disliking 3D. It's like this 'omg 60fps sucks' thing with The Hobbit. Misplaced snobbery.

well, the cheaper films do crowbar scenes in,but then the director's are only finding their feet with this way of expression,so give it some time.
The system isn't falsifying anything,3D is a viable business and will remain so.

No,no Internet badass over here, just someone who calls out haters such as your amazing self.
I do apologise for my low post-count though, and at the same time doubt I will ever reach your 'lofty heights'.

No,not in the world of 3D haters... in their neck of the woods 2D presentations are completely amazing and the only way to watch a movie.

:D

I saw mib3 and it ruined the film for me and my wife. It was the first 3d film I have seen since jaws revenge and I hated it. Slow moving stuff was fine but when someone was in the middle of the shot and someone moved around them, they were blurry where they wouldn't be in 2d version.

I'm looking forward to seeing the film again in 2d.

They showed the trailer for the new spiderman and it was terrible in 3d. The area of focus was so small it felt like I was watching the screen through a telescope.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. :)

The worst thing is that most of them don't know what they're on about, but mouth off anyway.
