*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

2) Everyone is trying to compare it to the iPad, why ffs, it is not supposed to be an iPad competitor.

Comparing a new tablet that dominates the market? Crazy.

And yes it is competing with the ipad. It may be a different size, it may be a different price point but Google want some of Apple's market share.

Spec wise it is nearly on par with a ipad.

also both ipad and nexus 7 run just a glorified version of a mobile OS, not a proper OS like windows/OSX on macs etc.
that is why its being compared

I agree with you on the OS front, however hardware wise the ipad is much better, but then again it should be for double the price.

IMO they should be comparing it to the kindle fire, nook or other budget android tablets.

You really think that people in the market for an iPad will be swayed by this? Surely it is two different markets.

Loads of people will see this to an alternative to the ipad - most people just want it for the bigger screen compared to their phones.

And for this sort of quality at this low price = impulse purchase.

Yeah I do. At the moment the rest of tablet market is very half hearted. Apple are the only ones that have gone all out. Once you look outside the techy people a tablet is an ipad, there isn't anything else. Google (and maybe MS later this year) I think are the first to properly go after a share of Apple's target audience (even if the specs differ)

I agree with this. We are techy people that understand that this is a great product at a brilliant price. I am not sure how google will convince people that a tablet is not an iPad.

I hope they can though.

So Google may well be selling these at a loss. But what do other retailers get for selling these at the same prices? Why would they bother taking stock from Google. Pretty sure warehouse, distribution, advertisements (I'm sure they will advertise it), etc will cost - for what reason?

The retailer would have bought them wholesale at a lower price and will make a tiny profit on the difference (minus VAT, costs etc). Google will take the hit.

Why would the retailer sell it then? Well as I understand it most electronics like TVs are sold on tiny margins, the real money is on the add-ons. A famous story goes that a high street store will make more money on selling you insurance or a HDMI cable than they will on the TV.

few places saying it will be more like the beginning of august before we get these :(

Where is there mention of August in that article? The 27 July date has been out there for a couple days in a fairly consistent manner. That said the retail supplier getting all the heat right now say that stock is due on 19 July, which is close to the report that Google would supply retailers around 20 July. I hope it's not wishful thinking, but I've got my fingers crossed for a July delivery.

well if the retailers mentioned are not getting them till the very end of July, it will be early Aug

Any confirmation this device will actually connect to a PC and let you transfer files, i.e does it support Mass USB Storage?

I wouldn't call 19 July the "very end of July"!?

Retailers receive stock from Google on 19-20 July, and then start shipping for pre-orders.

They will stock them on store shelves (i.e. on the high street for you to walk in, pick one up and buy it) on 27 July. (As described in the article that you posted - you have actually read it haven't you?)

These dates are purely based on widely published reports and info from a retailer; however, pending delays that we don't currently know about, this should be in our hands this month.

I think all stock android supports usb storage.

Just ordered the 16gb off the play store, hoping they'll be the first to ship it!
