*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

There is no doubt that they are going to make some profit on them, maybe not as much as they would like though.

A business is not going to sell something if they don't make any profit from it.

It's extremely common. Sell hardware at s loss, make it back in software or consumables. Game consoles, some printers etc. I suspect the original iPod was the same, though I'm guessing on that one.

Although do we have any real "hard evidence" from a trust worthy source as I wouldn't believe just because Sony and Microsoft told us that therefore it must be true........ :p

You only have to look at what's inside the PS3 vs what the retail price was to see it was being sold at a massive loss. The launch model had virtually everything; wi-fi, Bluetooth, Blu-ray, a HDD, lots of connectivity and memory card slots as well as the very expensive (and overly ambitious) Cell CPU.

Yes, it was expensive, but the Blu-ray drive/tech alone would have accounted for a chunk of that cost, considering what BD players were selling for at the time.

Reading around the interent for reviews of this product and 2 things have struck me.

1) It is universally praised, pretty much every review has been positive (minus sd and mhl support) this must have cost Google some money ;)
2) Everyone is trying to compare it to the iPad, why ffs, it is not supposed to be an iPad competitor. It has a 7"v 10" screen and costs less than half the price.

So Google may well be selling these at a loss. But what do other retailers get for selling these at the same prices? Why would they bother taking stock from Google. Pretty sure warehouse, distribution, advertisements (I'm sure they will advertise it), etc will cost - for what reason?

Spec wise it is nearly on par with a ipad.

also both ipad and nexus 7 run just a glorified version of a mobile OS, not a proper OS like windows/OSX on macs etc.
that is why its being compared

I'd only really be using it to read books and magazines/comics in bed. It's only £150~ but an expensive bedtime gadget in that regard!

I think £150 for that sort of thing is entirely worth it. Great if you're travelling too.
