Whos staying on Win7 and whos going to Win8?

Vista was terrible.

Only for noobs using very old hardware, personally Vista is my second favourite OS right after Win7,remember what 7 is based on yes Vista, funny how a lot of people forget that, btw I used it from day one and only issues I had were some companies not getting their drivers sorted, however once that was done no issues.

Btw I used Vista for gaming and beta games testing again no OS issues.

Vista FUD was spread on net by a lot of people that don't know what they are talking about and die hard XP users fact.

As to Win8 well I'm not too keen on metro due to being desktop PC user, but I probably give it another shot since I'm lucky enough to have got a new laptop so 15 quid for Win8 upgrade is a steal.

Or a Vista certification process that meant totally underpowered PCs were shipped with an OS and no hope of running it with anything approaching speed. Yes, Vista's issues were a public perception thing, but the perception was caused by underpowered hardware being certified by Microsoft to keep their OEMs happy. They are definitely not blameless.

Well its not Vista's fault but Microsoft's,its bit like trying to install XP back in 2001 when it was first released on 6 year old hardware back then ie 1995 level it not going to work ,Vista was released in 2007 so 6 year gap since XP,you see my point.

Back to what the thread was originally about - I will probably make the switch over as I was quite amazed at how fast the release preview was on boot up on my current spec.

Metro is alright, can't see it being much of a issue as I usually pin everything to the taskbar.

I'm still more interested as to gaming benefits Win8 will have over Win7 if any?

Btw has this been posted http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/windows-8-release-preview-vs-windows-7-benchmarked/20610 ,was worth a look and read through.

Nah,Il be sticking with 7..don't like 8 at all.

and even at £25 its still too expensive,Seems just like a themed/revamped version of 7.

I think a lot of people will stick with 7,But i would not put it past Microsoft to do something to make people "need" to upgrade,For example make DX12 only work on windows 8 or something so that gamers will want windows 8.

Ive only 1 reason to upgrade to Win8, and thats because I bought the wrong version of Win7... that being I bought Win7 Home Premium to install on my 2008 Macpro 2x Quad Core Xeon setup, I only bought it to allow me to run a few games, and thought it would fine, but Home premium doesn't recognise dual CPU setups and only uses 4 cores, which is probably enough for most games, but annoys me Its not using the full potential of the computer hardware.

I don't even have the slightest bit of interest in Windows 8. I've tried the BETA, tried the release preview and nothing stands out as remarkable over 7, the lack of the tried and tested layout (non Metro) is a bummer so a bit of a step back.

If I ever buy a Windows tablet then it will obviously run 8 but on a desktop or laptop I doubt I will ever use 8.

7 is the new XP, it's not gone anywhere since 2009 and won't go anywhere for the forseeable future either.

Once it goes final and both AMD and Nvidia start fine tuning those drivers probably be a whole new ball game.

I doubt that. It will most likely match 7, not beat it.

I'm starting to like Metro in a Server 2012 environment... maybe it'll win me over, eventually, for my desktop.

Why not upgrade to pro then while it was cheap?

Didn't like the win 8 previews, though that was mostly due to metro apps breaking, and driver issues. Like wifi dropping out. Also didn't like having some stuff in metro, and some stuff on normal windows, felt that it took too long to switch between the different enviroments.

That said I've only tried it on a netbook.

I'm no great fan of Win8 but like any OS drivers will only get better after final release, same happened to both Vista and Win7 driver wise that's why I said that.

I'm not keen on Metro either like I stated earlier as a desktop user, maybe I can get use to it over time.

Either way feedback from average users should be interesting once it goes live.

Thing is MS will really push Metro, and no doubt sponsor/develop some "killer" apps that won't appear on Windows 7. At the moment it's just fluff, but I can see the apps getting better.

The same farce which MS pulled with Halo 2 on PC making it Vista only. Then a work around was made available so it played on XP....

I will have to upgraded, dont have much of a choice being in IT and need to support my customers when they buy new PC's.

I'll stick with 7 until 8 has enough advantages/benefits to justify a) the expense and b) the hassle of upgrading. As it is, 8 doesn't offer much more to me than 7.

Well, I have just replaced Windows 7 with the Windows 8 preview with a view to a full upgrade when it is available. Annoyingly, it decided to dump my applications but I am nearly back to normal now. Really, one can just ignore Metro though presently I have the Messaging up running on one side of the screen. I might put Classic Shell on to get a Start Button but I see how it goes.

At $40 it really isn't expensive and there are some improvements in speed and memory coming with it. Maybe we might even get the new replacement from NTFS in a service pack sometime.
