*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Can i ask if you pre-order the nexus 7 from google play how do you exactly receive the £15 play store credit?

Is it a voucher or a gift card?

Fantastic, absolutely no need for a 16GB now :)

I still can't believe how much of a rip off that extra 8GB is when a PNY tiny 32GB USB stick costs £8.99.

So your going to have a cable attached to a flimsy connector that can be easily damaged for the price of a curry. Strange.

1.2mp is hd as far as webcams go, I'm interested to know if you can do video chat at that res.

Doe's android give you an option of the quality you wish to stream at?I have never used android so i don't know but i know facetime on the iphone doesn't.

And this camera technology isn't in the 90s either. People need to stop looking at megapixels as a measure of quality.

Uhm, who is?

Even the naff front facing cameras of phones can do decent video chats, I want to know if this is the same.

Sod taking pictures, I've got loads of other devices that will do that.

Yeah it's not ideal but for people on a budget (which lets face it this is what this device is aim at) choosing to pay either £30-40 for an extra 8gb of internal storage or £25-30 for an extra 64gb usb flash drive,it's a no brainer.

Also 16gb even for me is not enough for the amount of content that i would want to store on a device with the amount of capability's the nexus 7 has.

It's not a problem if you stream your HD files and other content to this device i suppose but i don't have access to those services nor would i wish to subscribe or buy things online at rip off prices.

The front facing camera isn't for taking pictures it's mainly there for video chat a.l.a Skype, also to be honest im not one who would want to take loads of pictures of my face nor look at loads of pictures of other peoples faces, whats the point in that?

The Ars Technica review notes that apps may look funky until developers adjust for the 7" screen. Has anyone seen this in action with other tablets? I.e. I assume the apps will run fine, not squashed and perfectly useable like any normal computer app does at different resolutions?

Plenty of existing devices already have a resolution of 1280x800 so it should be fine generally, just might find things a little big or small as they might not be optimised for 1280x800 on a 7" screen as theres not much around at that res/size. Most apps will be ok though :)

I do hope that they are as a 10 inch form factor is a much better experience than a 7. I had the original Galaxy Tab and although that was very portable it still felt like a glorified smartphone. Movies and videos looked too small and surfing required a touch of page enlargement. I have been spoilt by using a number of large screen tablets so it is a very subjective choice.

I've ordered a Nexus 7, and in some senses I see it exactly as a glorified smartphone because its going to be replacing my ageing Desire. The Desire will live in my pocket, and work as a tether when I need connection on the move, pick up texts and phone calls... but everything else will be done on the tablet (at least that is the plan).

I don't really understand the reviews I've read which bemoan the lack of 3G. I wouldn't want to pay for yet another subscription when I've already bought into one service and would be able to make use of that.

Wow i didn't even think of being able to plug in a usb flash drive with a micro usb to host usb cable, doe's this require software modding of a shipping nexus 7?Or is it just as simple as buying a usb drive and the cable?

I was ooing and arring about buying one of these when i knew it only had 8gb of storage,if i wanted the 16 gb (which really isn't enough as i want to be able to put 720p video/movies on this thing) it comes to £200 so doesn't seem so cheap then.

But the fact you can buy a 64gb flash drive for around £25 makes this a must buy for me now.Glad i come to overclockers every now and again to get the buzz on whats going on in the tech world :D

it requires it to be rooted

I have ordered a couple (one of each size) which Google have just told me on the phone that they "cannot cancel", despite not having yet charged my card, and despite me sending them a series of 'please cancel' messages through google checkout - fuming at that.

In this day and age not having a cancel button on the website itself is diabolical.

I was told the same when I tried to cancel yesterday. They told me to refuse delivery and then I'll get a refund at some point after.

You might want to check what they mean by that - IANAL but even Google has to abide by distance selling regulations. That sounds to me like the device has already entered the supply chain so cancelling the order wouldn't cancel the device being delivered.

As somebody else said, you should be able to refuse delivery, or to request a return.

I emailed Google Wallet rather than the 'Contact Google Commerce Ltd' link on the receipt to see if I would actually get a reply this time and they told me the same thing. Wasn't even an apology in the email, their customer service is **** poor.

Thank you for the clarification, PB. It seems a little odd that their supply chain mechanics do not facilitate the cancelation of orders that haven't even had payment taken. As an aside the, fellow I spoke to said that he was not "allowed" to cancel any orders placed before July 1st, not that he "couldn't". Either way, a mess.
