Any WoW old schoolers?

I played from EU launch till Cata. Not going to throw any more of my time away playing though. Whoever linked the Vurtne video, I'm pretty sure I killed him in 3 or 4. He gets me in every video though :(

a lot of people do get all misty eyed and look upon vanilla and tbc with rose tinted specs but a lot of that is with good reason. A quick jot down on what I liked about vanilla and tbc:

*World pvp was alive and kicking and due to this the world felt alive and vibrant.
*The lore was so much better during this period too.
*Questing wasn't so 'on rails' as it is now, you actually had a choice of what quests you wanted to do in each zone if you wished, and because of this there were some truely epic quest chains.
*Class quests!
*The classes actually all felt very different, homoganisation hadn't become the norm.
*Talent trees / points every level, I know some didn't like this but for me (and many like me), the freedom that the old system offered was a cut above the locked in abomination thats on offer now and coming in Mists.

Essentially you had choices, or an illusion of choice, that is no longer true. Choice is king in MMO's and for me it's no surprise that as Blizzard have whittled away those choices the player base have voted and left their game.

Not to mention no dungeon-finder therefore a sense of community on the server and you didn't get douches who didn't care of any consequences.

Also pre matchmaking battlegrounds were amazing fun, sure some servers had some queue times but the sense of community and rivalry that built on some servers was so so good.

I do miss the clashes between tarren mill and southshore, used to have so much fun with those battles :D.
Played from beta until about eighteen months ago, tried it a couple of times but just cant be bothered any more. Having said that, I'd jump at the chance to play on a vanilla pre expansion server. I know rose tinted specs probably account for a lot of the nostalgia but I'd love the opportunity to properly experience all that again.

You could try https://www.wow-one.com/, if this kind of thing is not allowed to be linked here I apologise but it is worth considering.

I played from day 1 vanilla, all the way upto and including the TBC endgame/raids. I loved vanilla, gave it up after tbc, came back briefly when Lich King came out, enjoyed it for a while but then quit again. Still have my accounts and am sometimes tempted to check it out again, but its only got worse from what i can see and the pandarian doesn't really appeal to me. Vanilla was the peak, Loved raiding MC,BWL,AQ40 and the original naxx with 39 other guys and gals, and who doesn't miss the good ol Southshore v Tarren Mill battles!

Played almost everyday since EU launch until Jun 2011. Good memories but last few years were pretty boring. Only reason I played it so much was because I only had an imac. Built myself a PC and the game quickly died for me when I had more options.

Yes, a few weeks/months after the EU release. Cannot honestly remember when but it wasn't all that amazing honestly. The itemization was all over the place (strength on rogue gear ftw), getting 40 people together was a massive pain in the ass as you probably had 10-20 people afking and because of the loot rules then you often had ninja looters.

TBC was the prime of WoW for me, 25 man raids meant it was less of a logistical nightmare getting everyone together, the raids themselves were awesomely designed and executed and genuinely challenging. Then Wrath came and it turned to ****.

As someone who wasn't a vanilla player (I came in with lich, left before cata and recently re-sub'd), i have to ask... was vanilla with all honesty as great as everyone claims it to be?

I'm always getting told how awesome this game used to be, usually without any info to back that up...

Vanilla was amazing but mainly for the community. It was difficult/complex to do 40mans and that made the sense of achievement all the better. You knew the better players and guilds and it was great.

But... As a few others have said TBC was probably the best incarnation of wow. Amazing raids, perfect balance between casual/hardcore and it still kept the sense of community going.

After that (and toward the end of TBC) they gave into lazy players and it got easier and easier until it fell off a cliff. Of a core of 20 players who went through vanilla/tbc together and was always a top 3 guild on our server there is now 1 left. We still keep in touch and have plenty of good memories (and screenshots) but no one really wants to play anymore. Says it all.

I think people are right in that TBC was the better game then vanilla and the best version of WoW released. However I maintain that it would have been better without LFG tool and matchmaking battlegrounds.

Did TBC have lfg?

Pretty certain it didn't though I was Guildies and knew everyone do never had any issues getting a group :)

It didn't have LFG specifically as it is today, it did have meeting stone summons and LFG improvements though which was the beginning of the end for traditional community driven group finding.

Ah I never realised :p

I just logged in and got bombarded with whispers to join groups as I was the best Boomkin on the server (although my rival (friendly one though) Boomchicken from our competitor guild would dispute that :D)

I loved that sense of community I had a list of players even outside the guild who were good for groups and then the dreaded blacklist I would share server wide. Destroyed the lives of more than a few ninjas in my time :D

I've played since the later days of Vanilla. The game is still good even now, but it often comes down to the people you play with more than the game itself in many respects.

TBC was the best for me so far, WoTLK was okay (Ulduar was a good raid), Cata was disappointing.

As for PvP, it's all over the place most of the time, but Season 3 and 4 were excellent.

I think for anyone who has played it properly, WoW is comfortably the best game ever made.

Double edged blade.

On one side it was an absolutely awesome tool that breathed tonnes of life into under used and lower level instances.

The other was that it did erode some community feel but this was only an issue if you actually had a community in which to play.

imo TBC ruined a lot of other things aswell as doing things really good to be considered better than vanilla imo

For the people whining about the difficulty in vanilla, I took a break when BWL came out and came back when Naxx came out as a level 55 warrior / 60 druid.

Before TBC I managed to equip my warrior in blue tanking kit, find enough like-minded/similar situation players - and clear MC, BWL and AQ40 within 3 months with the same group of people.
It was perfectly doable, it just took hard work - something most gamers are afraid of these days

Played since vanilla, I was always in the top server guild so I cleared end game pretty quickly. I got bored after the death wing expansion.
