How much money in general do people have?

Sorta grown an obcession with saving/making money :P - obviously again keep all rough/personal but I do hope to do something smart with my money, like invest further or uni. *But yeah I don't and never have had my own place so I've had it easy that way however I've always paid my way for things (not some "rich parents" handing you everything person) but if I had my own place I'd be paying £60/week? (that about right?) and bills, etc .....*

I suppose it would depend on the average rental prices in Hell whether £60 is a realistic figure (is the Devil a good landlord or are you subletting?) but in London which is some peoples idea of Hell you'd be unlikely to find anywhere passable for that. That's before you take bills into account and travelling costs etc but in some other areas of the country you could probably find yourself somewhere comfortably on £60 p/w.

Depends where you live and what kind of lifestyle you want to have. By age 22 I also had around £50K in savings but didn't really spend it - prefer to save for the future if I need something / have something to fall back on. Although that wasn't really too difficult seeing as I was living with parents and only paying £100-200 or so to them in rent.

I wouldn't feel comfortable if I didn't have a decent amount of savings stashed away (say 1 year salary) just in case something comes up. Originally I wanted to buy a place and get a mortgage - but in London not exactly cheap for something half decent so left that idea :D

Without a doubt I can totally understand someone not willing to reveal personal circumstances, it is after all none of anyones business. What I am talking about is why the amazement in people that do.

I take on board your comments on identity fraud though, something I haven't seriously considered.

Perhaps amazed should have read surprised.

My details are my own affair.

Suffice it though, I'm a student doing an additional year, with only part time work and **** all student loan.

Have a guess. ;)

Infact actually are you not the guy who has posted about being out of work and posted that string of totally bizarre threads in Motors about your 106?

I call BS.

Yes, he's the guy who lives in a scummy area, who kept getting his car stolen by 16 yearolds, he wanted to fix it up into some sort of GTI clone or something. He's now looking at spending 1.2k on a new car, however he doesn't want a 2k passat 2.0 because the insurance is too much.

The OP contains so much BS he could open a slurry plant.

so anyway me n the boys went to Boots - the perfume place and Dave n Jack were chillin' in the Golf GTi and I bought a WaterPik WP100, rank it well really so we cruise about with our 17"ers 'n' so slamed to the floor - proper 'ard chav lads ..... so I robbed Asda for 12 copies of Half Life 2 and an Xbox360 then went clubbin' proper got laid (as usual too)

*none of this is true drove with friends in a 1.1 Corsa, got mugged (acting the 'ard man) by 2 girls, tried to steal salmon but endedup payin andwent to pub and some nice place called g-bar (made friends!! wonder why its called that!)

Might be 4.30am but I'm gunna do some squats with my old computer desk

This has single-handedly saved the thread.

TBF. I spend silling amounts on my car...but still.

I dont understand people who are all secret about money and savings, In my view if you dont want to discuss it then your have too much money :)

As for myself I have about 2 grand saved and try to save around £1000 a month, I always end up eating into it tho :)

This isn't to show off that people have millions. :P

but in general how old are people and how much do they have saved? Would say over £50k be decent (need a car) but living with family and pay £20/week I am still 22 yr old (ow! 23 now). I've done college but never uni, I need to stop blowing money stupidly and concentrate on saving. Need to get my money counted up really have most in ISA (sucks nowadays)

SO in general what would you say people need to live life on?

I call shenanigans............. aren't you the one with the thief sister.

If you have 50K saved at 22 you must have a prolapsed anus by now............

Depends what your expenses are. If you're living with your parents and minimal rent and/or food to pay you're obviously going to have more spending money than someone with a 300K mortgage and umpteen kids to support. One good thing about the recent recession is that mortgage interest rates dropped to record low levels so have much less spend there, the downside is work is dropped off too.

Even before the recession though mortgages are about half the price of rents, accomodation is easily the largest chunk of income each month.

I've got about 6k in the bank at present. Most people I know only have huge debts.

lolz, £60 A WEEK ON BILLS LOLZ

I think you need to rent out your own room / house and see what cost actually go for the things that you take for granted when living with parents.

TV License £145 Yearly
Council Tax £1350 Aprox
Rent / Mortage 2 bedroom house £450 a month
Gas / Electricity / Water Various
Petrol to work Various
Food Various

You dont have over 50K in savings and only 22. You did not earn that all by yourself just on wages alone.

What do you do for a living?

Professional BS'er why do people lie about money, it's something i have never got, even friends make out they are better off than they are just to feel superior? when in reality they have a battered 10k credit card and pay a minimum payment which only just covers the intrest on it.

This is the same Scouse nutjob that is asking people to spec him a car for £600-1000.

Click back and move on, he's obviously slightly retarded and/or mentally unstable.

I've got a few £thousand in personal savings, but I've just taken £10k out to fund the everyday living costs of my postgraduate study in my own name, as I don't want to rely on family. My education up until university probably cost them about £75,000 so I've taken it as my own responsibility since age 18-19 (i.e. home leaving age).

So I'm basically immensely in debt... and I don't mind. I do have a family there if I'm ever in financial difficulties, but I don't see what's shameful about a young person being in debt, or not having much liquid cash. Isn't that the point? Especially with the current system. I've already had the better part of £100k invested in my education and upbringing, so I don't exactly feel 'poor'.
