Modric back in training: Villas-Boas confirms Croatian has been fined over missing training

Wantaway midfielder Luka Modric has returned to training with Tottenham at Spurs Lodge, the club have confirmed.

Modric has been fined for missing training amid speculation of a move away, with Real Madrid thought to be the favourites for the Croatian's signature.

He did not join Tottenham on their pre-season tour of the United States but was back at the club's training ground on Monday.

A statement on the club's official website on Monday night read: "The club can confirm Luka Modric has returned to training today (Monday) at Spurs Lodge. The coaching staff will now determine the remainder of his pre-season preparation."

Manager Andre Villas-Boas, currently in the States with Spurs, confirmed the midfielder had been fined for missing training.

He said in a press conference in Los Angeles: "The situation as it stands is that the player is under club discipline for not being present.

"There is close interest in him but we have to hold onto our values and our rights and at the moment the situation for Luka is that he is under club discipline.

"Unfortunately for him he's going to have to be fined for the club for not being present.

I wonder if he'll actually end up staying at Spurs!

Seems Cahill leaving Everton to go to Red Bulls in the US.

Didn't see that coming tbh, but I guess that funds the move for pienaar.

Lucas Moura's agent Wagner Ribeiro says any move to Manchester United is off as they will not up their bid for the Brazilian ace.

United have lodged an offer for the Sao Paulo midfielder, currently in England with Brazil's Olympic squad.

But with Sao Paulo wanting around £30million, it appears their asking price could be too high.

Ribeiro, one of the leading agents in South America, does not think Moura will be moving anywhere this summer after United's bid was rejected.

"They have reached their limit," Ribeiro told UOL.

"Lucas Moura won't leave. He is happy at Sao Paulo. We have to forget this subject. There is no possibility he leaves now.

"Manchester United made an offer, which was rejected and they won't make another one as they have reached their limit."

:(

Perhaps he's playing hardball.

As I said yesterday about De Jong. Bayern believed to have bid 8m but we will probably settle on 10m.
This paves the way for De Rossi or Martinez I hope.
Hoping we can get Ade and RSC out as well.

It didn't sound like Fergie was done yesterday when he was talking about Lucas so I suspect this is the agent trying to force our hand and wrap the move up asap. If it does all fall through I dont think it'll be the end of the world, he's still young enough to go back in for him next summer if we still feel he's needed (which I still dont tbh)

RVP please though Fergie....

Santi Cazorla to Arsenal Perhaps?

"The 27-year-old has told Málaga of his intention to depart and he has also spoken to Arsenal to tell them he is keen on joining them."

Wonder if we are still perusing Ganso aswell (doubt it). We could make 1 or two more interesting transfers before this window closes:cool:

Hmm, Wenger said he won't be signing any more players unless our currently injured players suffer setbacks, unless he was talking specifically about central midfielders. Still, we need a right back, Jenkinson isn't good enough to be the immediate backup so it's a tad annoying to see us linked with wingers, strikers, attacking midfielders, defensive midfielders, goalkeepers and basically any other position apart from right back. :p

Yeah, I don't think Fergie would have said what he did yesterday if they weren't going to raise their bid. It seems very odd.

There's also the fact that Oscar's agent called the Chelsea deal off 2 hours before a bid was accepted, so who knows what's going to happen really. :o

If we're going to get RvP, we need to do it quickly. As soon as City offload one of their strikers, they'll be in with the big money, and won't hesitate to give Arsenal what they want.

I think they are trying to draw it out, because under the terms of Mouras contract (he owns a portion of his own registration) he is entilted to 20% of any transfer fee and after Aug 1st this rises to 30%....so his agent (who is also his partner in owning part of that registration) is probably looking to maximise their investment as they obviously cannot retain that percentage of a players registration under PL rules.

United know this and are aware that it is in the best interests of Sao Paulo to do a deal before the 1st of August.......I think it will come down to a compromise on who gains the benefit of the deal to be done.

If we are signing Carzola and selling RVP, where is Walcott going to play?

With the whole RVP thing, obviously I do not want Arsenal to sell him, as not only is he world class but at 29 he is what we have missed, an old head.

However, as Arsene has said the club is biggger than any individual, Arsenal will see another day if RVP goes. Lets be honest here he is a bloody good player, but very injury prone.

Miraculously he lasted all of last season with out an injury. Maybe he's only one since he has been at the club in 8 years.

20m for an injury prone 29year old (world class) striker is not bad business for Arsenal.

Sell him and bring someone in who is hungry to play for the club.

What Arsenal need to get back is the ability to be hard to beat. The biggest thing I'm most excited about is Steve Boulds appointment. An old school defender as assistant manager, will hopefully mean they will make sure they drill the defenders on the art of defence!

Unlike in previous seasons, where we have been leaky.

Considering Gibbs, Djourou, most of our other young defenders, I wouldn't be massively enthusiastic about it, our younger defenders are pretty awful. Who has a clue if he'll do well, his job isn't about organising defence, he's the assistant manager, maybe he'll help there, maybe he won't.

Some defenders turn into great attacking coaches, because they can tell a striker how to play against a defender, some defenders make great defensive coaches, some great defenders make awful coaches.

having a competant left and right back will do more for our defence than a new coach, but good coach and good players is the only way to a great defence.

What we lacked was a proper DM, Arteta was good but still not good enough, the fact that we barely won(but for the last game of the season) without Arteta as DM suggests we have no suitable backup. While I like Arteta and he's FAR better than Song there, its not his best position and we can certainly improve there, a new DM to cover the defence and organise the midfield, with Arteta/Wilshire alongside said new DM would give us an incredibly capable defensive midfield. Arteta/Wilshire both great at winning the ball, closing, and covering runs/blocking gaps, but great at going forwards as well

Look at Barca, overall not particularly good defence with only one player in Puyol who I'd call a top defender(and he missed a huge portion of the past 2 seasons), their defence comes from Xavi, Busquets, Fabregas/Iniesta being great defensively, with the attacking players also being awesome going forwards. Midfield is KEY to a great defence, and Song/Denilson/Ramsey/Theo/Gervinho are all basically rubbish at the defensive side of their game.

One specialised defensive player with a couple great attacking players who are also great defending would give our back four immense protection.

Priority would be DM, right back, left back at this point, we don't have an out and out DM in the squad, we need a top left and right back but money wise we spent big wages and a fee on Santos and likely can't get rid of him. DM though, Wenger said no to M'villa because "Diaby should be coming back and is first choice for France".... I'm not sure if he realises that M'villa is fairly defensive and Diaby is attrocious defensively or not, but I think that is going to screw our season, Wenger thinking Diaby will both play a part(he won't) and be good enough(he's not).

First proper preseason game today, however afaik Podolski and Giroud aren't with the team yet, and won't be ready for the start of the season probably. So thanks to Wenger's prannying around we'll likely start the season with Chamakh or Gervinho upfront, neither of which fill me with confidence. We really should try and get good value from the RVP deal by getting Berbatov in exchange, would be awesome, is a great player, is ready for the start of the season and good in this league. 15mil + Berbatov or something would be fantastic for us.

If you sign him then I hope he follows in the footsteps of fellow South Americans, Anderson, Forlan and Veron :p

It's interesting that you've been saying that people should be more excited about signing proven talents, that they've seen first-hand, rather than a 'promising talent' from South America. But both Forlan and Veron would have been players that most people would have regularly seen pre-transfer and both were, or were very close to being, world-class performers at the time.

So even players who you see perform at the top level week in week out, can fail to adjust to life in a different league, or even a different team in the same league.

Signing these top players can always be a bit of a gamble, and often people criticize SAF for notable big failures in the transfer market, but I think you can be sure that if other managers had had his resources available, they'd have splashed the cash on at least as many, if not more, flops - in the chase for glory.

 I doubt many people watched Indepeniente much. I'm not sure how you could call Forlan world class at that point either...

Veron some people might have seen.

This proven unproven stuff is nonsese.

Berbatov has always been average and we still spent world class money on him.

Veron was a great player not utilized correctly, Anderson is a attacking midfielder who Fergie has tried his best to ruin by trying to hammer him into some kind of combative defensive midfielder that Anderson is really rubbish at being.

Forlan again, had confidence issues, but is very much a floating striker, who we again tried to hammer into something he wasnt.

Everybody was lumping on Nani being rubbish until Fergie was forced to play him in his best position when Valencia was injured, and oh look, we've got quite simply one of the best inside rights in europe.

Who we have been playing as a left winger for the past two years.

Over individual games Nani may well come out better, but Valencia's consistancy is much more worthy of the team over the whole season

"One of the best " including his often painful accuracy & selfishness? Yur having a laugh

Not me, ive been lumping on Fergie being out of touch with reality for the last few years while stating that Anderson is good and that Nani is great. He got tehh skills.
