Why? Why isn't the shirt as sacred, for example?

It's hard to say really, shirts have, historically, had sponsors on them so it seems more normal.

Old Trafford is probably the best known sports stadium in the world and is quite a historical place, a renaming wouldn't sit well with most people, even if, in our position it would be financially sensible.

It's more sacred than other things that are commercialised, yes.

Cant believe you're even entertaining him tbh. If someone cant understand the difference between selling the naming rights of a stadium and lets say shirt sponsoring then you may as well give up now.

Well he doesn't support a team so he may have trouble understanding the issue.

Shirts have been sponsor-less longer than they've had sponsors, though. At the time there were no sponsors on them, and there was a discussion about it happening, do you think people were as irked as you'd be about a stadium getting a sponsor? Perhaps yes. However, it's now accepted, and deemed fine. Can't that translate to stadium sponsorship?

Also, I'd consider a shirt to be more sacred, given their permanence, relative to a stadium's permanence. Sure, designs will change a bit, but basically all shirts will keep the same fundamental design... whereas new stadiums are built more often.

Shirt designs change quite a bit, and fairly often... the only real thing 'sacred' about them is the badge. Stadiums aren't built that often...

I don't really think they're the same thing.

I agree, people refer to a stadium as a location and a place. Changing the name would cause confusion. The same wouldn’t happen as far as shirts go.

It would be like someone approaching the queen with 50m to rename Buckingham Palace, it wouldn’t happen as it’s an iconic place that’s known around the world.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Holland international Vurnon Anita from Ajax on a 5 year contract.

Well with all of the other players we were interested now having moved on, Martinez/RvP/Silva and so on i think Mancini will force through at least an offer.

If we don't sign anyone then we still have the strongest squad in the Prem and we have the mental advantages gained from last season as well.

Rodwell i think can become a good player for us and we have got back a new and improved Tevez making our front line even better!

The MUFC announcement today is due about 1pm, it's apparently a commercial thing and not a transfer, however (wasn't sure before).

They better not rename Old Trafford...

Probably a daft question but what difference would it really make if they did? Would almost everyone not still refer to the stadium as Old Trafford? You can point to a number of renamings of sporting arenas and people still use the old name colloquially even if the "official" terminology is now different.

I'd agree it might leave a sour taste in the mouth but in terms of actual effect it seems likely to matter little.
