it had better perform well, the whole thing is a bit of a gamble that i went into on a bit of a fancy based on my want of something german, 6cyl, ideally rwd.

I can't speak for the M3 personally but a few people I've known that have/had them say they are brilliant cars still due to a great chassis etc.
I know the 318iS despite being low powered was a brilliant and very capable car, although it did falter when driving hard up a steep hairpin section of road when I was hunting down -westy- in a 1.6 MK1 MX-5. Part of that could well have been due to me not knowing the road section as well as him, but a lot was down to the fact the E36 was heavy and so turn-in etc. were at very different times and I was unable to power out of the corners as quickly as I'd have liked (M3 power would have helped lots).

Sounds like a bad setup to me. When it comes to foot work my 328 has the best of everything that I could afford. Turn in is superb and you can slam on the gas very early. In fact I find the sooner the better, the front end certainly works best when you are hard on the throttle.

You might well find this is the case actually, I still miss the agility and fun factor of my Colt, and that only had the most basic of modifications. Weight is the enemy here, I firmly believe that. shoes stripped out 11xxkg e36 is much more fun than my full weight one even though the basics are identical.

Old dampers, bushes etc. yeah but also the 318iS is only 140bhp in a 1400kg or whatever car, it doesn't have the best of power to weight ratios. I found the issue on said steep hairpins was that if I turned in early I'd bottom out, little bit late and I'd be closer to the hedge than I'd want (ie almost in it). Very tight and steep hairpins in that sort of weight and power car are not going to be quick, especially if you don't know them. That was more just an example of how they aren't always super awesome but as I say that could be down to the power partly, but also as you say, the geometry will have played a large factor too.

On known corners that weren't so steep and on kinks / visible corners the car was glued to the back of the mx5, biting at it's heels. :)
 
Ive been doing a lot of reading about the geometry the car came with and how the character can be improved. Lots of rear toe will make any car turn in dull

Had loads of different rear toe settings on mine, never noticed any difference with the turn-in. In fact scrub what I said about it being good, it's merely ok, steering ratio is really slow in these, will put an e46 rack in mine when I get around to it. 3.0 M3 is even worse than non-M for this actually.

Back to toe, not enough and you won't have traction for ****, no less than 15mins. 30min or more I found results in a scary sort of snap oversteer when you really step on it. 20min is about perfect. For front 0 is best.
 
I changed the trailing arm bush on mine in the week.. Thought it was going to be a nightmare, but managed to hit both bushes out with a hammer and chisel.

Hoping to goto my first drift day tomorrow in it.. Just need to find more tyres!
 
two evening update

last night i painted the new parts with the final paint finish. i used FLAG hammer finish black metal paint and its a great product. goes on nicely and leaves a great finish with very minimal effort

no more 3.0 back end
the old subframe had poly bushes, so did the old trailing arms. they had to come out to be cleaned up and refitted to the new gear

i put the new subframe up first and then the diff. im sure i got a pic of the subframe by itself but cant find it

i got the off side trailing arm on too and got the cv joint in the hub after some effort. camber arm, spring arm is on. im actually dying at the moment so that might be why i didnt get pics!

tomorrow = near side trailing arm

insert springs and ARB.

fit wheels

reverse onto ramp and tighten bolts so the bushes have the correct pre load.

also, the offside trail arm bush holder, ive put the bolt in the wrong way. when i correct that i can remove the arms without removing the holder and ruin the geometry.

got to go and die now
