I can't speak for the M3 personally but a few people I've known that have/had them say they are brilliant cars still due to a great chassis etc.
I know the 318iS despite being low powered was a brilliant and very capable car, although it did falter when driving hard up a steep hairpin section of road when I was hunting down -westy- in a 1.6 MK1 MX-5. Part of that could well have been due to me not knowing the road section as well as him, but a lot was down to the fact the E36 was heavy and so turn-in etc. were at very different times and I was unable to power out of the corners as quickly as I'd have liked (M3 power would have helped lots).
