Well having a stronger team than a team that got 3rd last season doesn't sound like a terrible place to be in..![]()
Firstly, we don't have a stronger team, we're weaker at striker, significantly weaker and stronger at left wing. Central midfield, we have no idea how good Santi is, he might do great in this league, he might be rubbish. it doesn't matter if Podolski is rubbish at left wing, we'll have a rubbish player WITH a footballing brain rather than a rubbish one without a brain

Secondly, Spurs is difficult to judge, they had a massive lead on us, MASSIVE... then we got less points in the second half of the season. Spurs had a team last year that could have finished within a few points of the title winners, then threw it away, the squad was stronger than us last year, played better and was miles ahead till Redknapp did the "wow, I'm ahead, must panic" mode. Bale on wing, helping push for top spot in the league, so in the run in after xmas he switches him to a free role which backfired spectacularly. We didn't win 3rd, Spurs absolutely and beyond reason threw it away, likewise Chelsea threw away the top 4.
Spurs haven't strengthened more than us, yet, and are infact weaker, but they were a team capable of being 10+ points ahead of us, Chelsea had a team capable of beating us, Chelsea have strengthened more than we have, Newcastle haven't lost any top players, had a lot of players new that season who will almost certainly further improve, have bought 3-4 players, one who is potentially a top player and might strengthen more.
Basically we needed to strengthen SIGNIFICANTLY to match Spurs in the first half of last season and we haven't done that. We've essentially fixed the least problems of anyone in the top 6 so far.... that isn't good.
