Hello all,

Not posted in the motors forum before, be gentle.

I'm finally looking at re-entering the car market, and I've got around £10k to spend on the car itself (insurance seems to be around £1k for all I've looked at). Obviously looking at used cars for this purchase, given the end of market I'm going for.

So far I've shortlisted:

350Z GT (8-10k)
BMW 1 Series 130I or 130I LE (9k+)

I'm looking for something fun to drive, with 20+MPG (more the better), car will be used for the odd commute but mostly weekend driving as a treat. Comfort is a factor, I would rather my spinal cord wasn't rattled from my body.

Can anyone give experiences on the above cars, or suggest alternatives I can look at.

Provisos:

  • No boy racer cars (Don't spec me a suped up Nova!)
  • Low servicing costs (probably around 5000 a year mileage top end)

Thanks in advance!

Rob

Might be a struggle with that budget.

I mean used, not brand new.

I've successfully found 30k mileage BMW 1 series, and 350Z within the Budget (2006). The limited edition BMW is however around 10-12k.

If you have other cars I may have overlooked I'd love to check them out!

With roof, or without? I presume you only need 2 seats with the 350z on the short list.

Are you relying on the car for commuting every day? A fun only car for £10k is quite an exciting prospect.

EDIT: the comfort factor is probably your limitation.

My poor typo... but yes ideally it should go faster than 20MPH :D

Wouldn't say relying on it every day, but having is work when I want it to is an obvious bonus! (rules out TVRs).

Roof is a tough one, ideally I would love a convert, but soft tops are not something I want to mess around with so most likely have to stick with a coupe.

I'm not one to moan for comfort, by that I meant something with cushions and not bucket racing seats. :p

Probably not going to like how it drives if you prefer the bigger capacity engines but an S2000 wouldn't be a bad shout, loving mine at the moment.

What sort of 3 litre Z4 could be had with that budget as well?

Only doing 5k a year means servicing won't be much on most things as you'll be doing it on a time basis rather than miles.

350Z is a good choice. Nice comfy GT but can be rinsed around when you feel like it. Has the looks too, unlike the fugly 1 series.

Oi the 130i Msport is a beautiful car. As a 130i owner I would say go for the 350z I picked the 130i as I needed a semi pratcial car. If I didn't need seats or much boot space I would have probably got a 350z or Boxster

Seats in the back of a 1 series are utterly useless!!! Unless you are a midget of course and don't need personal leg room in the front

m sport 130i is a good car no doubt but still fugly, well not as fugly as it's lower specced bretheren :D

Could deffo get a Z4 roadster for that budget, but a coupe will probably take a little longer to find - £10k is the bottom end of the market atm.

I wouldn't say the rear seats are useless and I wouldn't describe them as roomy either but a normal size adult fits well enough in the rear seats
