Just bought a E46 320CD M Sport Coupe.

Have been contemplating getting a HID Xenon Conversion done, what are your thoughts? yay or nay? Has anyone else tried this? Hard to fit?

Just to warn you, it's illegal unless you have the correct e-marked lenses, headlight washers and a self levelling system.

Saying that, most people pass their MOT with them.

But, I hate when they're not installed properly as they end up blinding me.

Does it have Projectors? HID's are not bad in Projectors but in standard headlights they dazzle really bad. I personally wouldn't bother with them now, I'd just buy some decent headlight bulbs.

Yeah, I've been reading around and it seems as though it's quite a ball ache, you must also tell your insurance people too, as it's a considered a 'modification'.

I've just ordered some to retrofit to my e39 which has projector headlights. I'll let you know how it goes.

Find me an e-marked HID kit and I'll change my usual point of view of them being illegal for use on UK roads.

HIDs in projector lenses is fine.

It is when chavs fit them into reflector style lenses and they send the light absolutely everywhere.

I agree, but my EX Civic has xenon/HID lights in and that has normal reflector headlights from the factory. Seems to be quite good and keeps the light in the right direction.

But they are specially designed reflectors, like some Volvos and Renaults. Not a lot have this and so are not suited for HIDs.

Hi,

I fitted my HID kit this morning and just took the car around the block for a test in the dark.

Very pleased with the results.

The kit was a little confusing at first as had some additional cables that were not required (thanks for the pointers [TW]Fox). Also, on the loom were some rubber grommets, again not required on my car. I cut the grommets off and removed the spare cables and then was easy. Plug car loom into ballast and then ballast into HID bulb.

I had to file 1mm or so off of the enclosed bulb holders' lugs as they were too thick to fit into the headlamp. I expected this as read about it on an e39 forum.

The kit I bought is this one here; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220468300431 and I would recommend it.

I went for 4300k bulbs.

I will keep an eye out for the OEM ballast brackets as there isn't anywhere perfectly suitable to mount the NSF ballast.

2006 A4 without standard fit xenons are reflectors IIRC. With projectors, the headlight is a glass dome.

if you do a conversion you need to do it properly and adapt an actual HID housing into your headlight unit and not just fit a HID bulb into your existing housing.

The HID need to be pointed down to prevent burning the eye sockets of the car in front and oncoming traffic.

The refector halogen (stock) bulbs basicly reflect light at a pretty wide angle (I'm guessing 45 degrees) bot horizontally and vertically. So if tyou out a HID bulb in that socket/housing it will dazzle every other road user in front of you.

Thanks for letting me know.
