HD8800 Series Coming

Yup, no surprises there :)

@ LtMatt, Sapphire and HIS do look like they use pretty low binned GPU's at times, running @ 1.26v is pretty horrendous for a 7970. that card will have been a total shambles at any clock.

I know someone with a HIS 7870 that's like that, his performance is way below mine, even a couple of entry level ASUS ones don't seem to measure up.

Have a look here. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18443672

You're right though. My card was a Vapor-X reject.

1.26v stock? Wtf, bet the card was throttling. :D

I think something must have been wrong with your system somewhere JD to come to the conclusion that a 670 with x4 aa is smoother than a 7970 with AA off and shadows only on high.

That's definitely not something ive experienced, but i wish you all the best with your next purchase.

Some fella posted these in another thread just today, seems to indicate things are pretty close now. :)

Probably Matt. The Heaven score was kinda on point wouldn't you say at 1175Mhz?. It was 2101. It's nothing to do with remaining drivers or anything as I nuke everything prior to installing cards and I test friends cards in my system frequently. So it's not user error. Also the only games installed on my system were BF3 and Pro Evolution as it was a new install after buying my Samsung 830. However why is there no problem with the GTX 670 just weeks apart?. I went back to my 6950 without a problem also so that also indicates no problems elsewhere. I just find it strange you thinking it's something to do with my system yet my system is fine with the 6950 and GTX 670 but not so good with the 7970?.

If it was throttling in BF3, fair enough, but to not do so on Heaven confuses that conclusion.

End of the day I'm an AMD man when it comes to graphic cards. I'm giving my honest opinion on my findings here and my systems stability is not in question due to listed reasons above. This was mainly on 64 man servers and BF3 is on my SSD drive. If it was maybe because I wasn't running HT or something then fair enough but I doubt that's the case mate otherwise I'd have seen the same with the 670. :( I wanted the 7970 as well as Crysis and Metro are games I've yet to play which run a lot better on AMD cards but I'm now settling on 3D which is better suited to Nvidia. Don't worry though, I'm always an AMD man :D. Maybe I'll buy one to test with and take the loss on Ebay but for now I think I'm done deciding after sending back both the 670 and 7970 back. Just want to game :(.

Enough CPU power?. 4 threads @ 4.2Ghz?.

That's what he said.

Yes it's default was 1.26v. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=22808195&postcount=11

Don't wait, if you wait you'll be waiting forever, there is always something around the corner.

The new cards will come out, 'priced too high' or you'll 'wait for better drivers' then it'll be '9xxx series are coming' :p

Yeah probably enough for a single card. I haven't tested enough on CPU usage in BF3 with 4/8 threads on a single card.

You need 8 threads overclocked above 4 Ghz if you don't want to bottleneck a pair of 680's/7970's though. Probably the same with 7950 crossfire/670 SLI as well.

The bottleneck with an i5 2500K/3570K is around 10-15% GPU usage in 64 player BF3 MP. Equates to a noticeable amount of FPS difference with a counter on although without you'll struggle to notice any different :).

Fair play JD, i guess we'll never know for sure. BF3 does benefit from HT, it loves cores/threads but i doubt that was the reason for your less than stellar performance.

To be honest ive no idea and id just be speculating if i said anything.

All i can say is that bf3 really is smooth for me at the highest details @1080p with 4xaa.

Even if i run my card at 925/1375 stock it feels smooth, thought the fps drop a fair bit.

Come back to the dark side mate, you know you want to. :D (this is a joke don't start flaming me please)

It's okay guys just buy a 7850 and overclock it. I promise it does 60+fps on BF3 Ultra 4xMSAA. 12.9 beta's add 20fps to the minimums I swear...

Are you sure? Not a single CPU scaling review of BF3 on the entire internet shows this:

http://www.techspot.com/review/458-battlefield-3-performance/page7.html

This is one of very few games that is purely GPU bottlenecked.

With an 2500K @ 4.6GHZ, I would only see 85% max GPU usage on SLI 680's @ 5760*1080 but after getting a 3930K @ 4.6, I see GPU usage at 99% in SLI now. Maybe it is drivers or the game or a genuine bottleneck, I just don't know.

Other variables to consider is:

PCI-E 2.0 to 3.0
Ram from 1600 to 2333

I wouldn't argue with anybody on this though as there are many reasons/variables for me not getting 99% GPU usage.

Are there any reviews showing this? I've never seen any review on BF3 showing much improvement from CPUs.

You'll struggle to find many with multi GPU's let alone testing with different CPU's :D.

I moved from i5 2500k, 680 SLI to i7 3770k, 680 SLI (i.e. CPU change only). Same windows install, just dropped the CPU in and set the overclock and went.

GPU usage from 80-85% to 95-99% instantly.

In 64 player multiplayer you're CPU limited with 2 GPU's and an i5. An i7 releases the bottleneck.

For single cards, an overclocked i5 is more than enough.

The extra 10-15% usage only equated to a few FPS though. Not worth it on its own.

who is he?:confused::confused:

Spell his name backwards but replace the p with a y at the beginning :D.
