*** The Official Samsung Galaxy Note II Thread ***

"edge to edge" screens have been the promised land for the past 3 years. I'm not holding my breath (particularly in terms of the vertical bezel), but if they can improve on the Note 2 then sign me up as well :)

The note 2's screen is 83% of the vertical height - more than any other smartphone by a fair margin. I suppose pushing closer towards 90% with the Note 3 might be possible...

83% is impressive. I personally like a physical home button so I don't think they could take much more off the bottom, but at the top where it says 'SAMSUNG', that could easily have been another few mm of screen. I doubt they will remove samsung from the front though but here's wishing...

I think it's more packaging considerations than anything else. There's a lot of stuff to cram into a smartphone! Still, if they want to further increase the screen proportion then the rounded edges will need to be reduced - the screen isn't far away from the start of the curves as it is, particularly at the bottom.

As far as physical buttons - I agree with you :) Well, I dislike on-screen buttons anyway (waste of good screen space!). I'd be happy for the "physical" home button to be replaced by a capacitive button though, like the menu and back buttons. They seem to be a little more responsive than the home button, and can be pressed with a fraction of the force (which can be useful when using the phone with one hand).

You probably should apologise, this is rather n00b :p I'm only messing... but... Amazon free apps are likely to come from the Amazon App store ;)

Thanks... Wasn't aware that Amazon had an app store! I thought that all android apps came through the google store. Never really been a big app user...

The front of the note II and GS 3 would look so much better if Samsung lost the hard home button IMO, especially when it doesn't even look the same as the rest of the chassis. It looked good on the GS 2, but nowadays it is better to have on screen or all capacitive like the one S/X and LG optimus G.

Hi all, new to this forum. Found it when I was searching for Note II info. :)

The EE contracts are expensive no doubt, and my current T-Mobile contract isn't finished yet so I'm going to have to buy my way out.

Once this is done I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for the 12 month EE contract with 5GB data, was going to go for the 3GB but the 5GB only works out £10 more overall:

3GB = £56 - 12 months - £90 handset = £762
5GB = £61 - 12 months - £40 handset = £772.

Few reasons for this, I really really really want a Note II that is LTE capable, obviously would like to use the new 4G network, and I'm sick of 2 year contracts!

I have a Galaxy S3 at the moment so I will sell this too to make some of the money back which won't make it as bad.

Is anyone having/had issues connecting to the internet using mobile data connection?

I finally got my new micro sim working last night but unless im on wifi i cannot use the internet althought calls and texts are fine.

I have checked and mobile data connection is turned on, i have googled around and cant seem to find a cure for this and as t-mobile have been next to useless i want to try everything else before ringing them.

I am wondering if it may be due to 4g connection. as i live in Bristol Im wondering if my phone is connnecting using a 4g signal and as i dont have a 4g tariff tmobile is blocking it at their end.

on my screen on the top right hand side of the status bar there is a capital N with a blue icon in the bottom left corner of the N that looks like the wifi icon turned 45 degrees, not sure what this means

edit; I turned my dataconnection to 3g only and still no joy

would love to be able to read a full user manual but cant see one and the "quick start" booklet is somewhat limited

First 24 hours of using this phone...coming from a S3...the screen size is great, web browsing is definately more comfortable vs S3.

I wish more apps would use the space better, like the tablet versions (e.g. Gmail, Sonos).

Someone mentioned this could be enabled to see tablet apps - how is this done?

N is the NFC on notification.

3g should work fine on a 4G phone. Is there no 3g sign near your signal bars?

I was thinking that as im in a 4g area it may have been trying to connect to 4g signal and not defaulting to 3g instead causing the error.

I just got off the phone with t-mob and it turns out it was an error on the way they had my account settings setup, they did something and now its working.

I have to say the speed is awesome even on 3g!

Got a question guys as to what you lot would do.

Obviously the EE plans suck royally so what I'm torn between doing now is getting a sim free Note 2 (3g) and rocking it on a rolling Three contract and see what o2 and vodaphone bring to the table or do I commit to getting an Note 2 LTE via T-mobile/Orange and hold out hoping they see the error of their ways.

I live in Newcastle so we don't get 4g until the end of Nov I believe so their isn't a great rush really and it seems like it would make sense to wait but i'm just stuck as to should I bother with an LTE handset or not.

I guess I was in a similar boat... I went with an LTE phone from T-mobile, but I did that before I knew the EE 4G pricing. I imagine that prices will come down to something sensible once the competition gets their 4G, but that could be a good few months yet.

It's worth thinking about how long you plan to keep the phone. If you're going to stick with it for a full two years, then the LTE phone on contract becomes more attractive. If you're expecting to switch after 12 months or so (Note3?), then you're probably better off buying the 3G phone. In 12 months time all the networks will have 4G up and running, competition will drive pricing down, and you can choose the best contract.

Following the demise of the great o2 deal, what's the thoughts on the cheapest 3g note 2 with a 'throwaway' sim. Gutted I procrastinated previously :-(

at this point, isn't it a case of whether you can buy it outright or not? buy it from germany or some such and get a tenner a month giffgaff sim, or if you can't buy it outright, then the vodafone deal possibly?

this one i think

I want to do this but because of the sheer amount of posts in this thread i won't be able to find the site that sells it.

Please can you post the cheapest place i can buy a Grey 3G Note 2?

last i heard it was the german amazon. there's a link a few (probably many) posts back. have a look on XDA as well, there were threads there a while back asking for the best place to buy it from

afaik it is the same phone, you just obv choose english during language select instead of german. won't be LTE though i don't think

but, again, have a look on XDA, bargain sites etc. you might find a deal on contract or some such.

This one? Works out to about £460? And it's completely fine to work in the UK and is the same phone?
Yeah same phone and it works in the UK. You receive an EU USB charger, instead of a UK one and the CSC is set to DBT not BTU which is not an issue.

Just modding mine now, added a load of apps to the multi-screen menu in framework-res.apk. Pretty cool watching TVCatchup and reading the news in a split window. And increased some of the volume levels in default_gain.conf.
