I think there is some truth in this. Developers don't want a third version to have to develop for. By keeping the same resolution as iPad 1 and iPad 2 all the apps will just work and still look perfect. This is part of the problem with android apps - so many devices with different resolutions makes it a pain to develop develop for.

In all honesty I still quite happily use the iPad 1 if someone else is using the 3, and I don't think "ugh, this looks too blurry".

I think when they do switch to retina it will be when they can get the same resolution as ipad3

Yes. At any one point they've only sold devices with 2 resolutions on iOS for each device:
iPhone/iPod Touch Retina vs non-Retina
iPhone 5/iPod Retina vs 4/4S/Touch 4G Retina (they retired the 3GS when the 5 came out)
iPad Retina vs non-Retina

The thing with the Mini is that 2048x1536 would be way too much for 7.9" (consider the 13" MBP Retina) IMO.

At least with the Mini we can see what the next iPad will be like to an extent, with the biggest thing for me being the smaller bezel and touch rejection at the edge of the screen.

Is anyone else strangely really tempted to get the iPad mini?

I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad 3 which is only really used by my girlfriend as I use my MBP mostly when at home, but don't know what it is about the iPad mini that is so appealing to me, I know it will be a waste of £269 but looks so cool! lol someone please knock some sense into me

I am for my GFs Xmas present, I don't mind the price as I've found comparable Android tablets to be awful, and I'd rather she had the smaller form factor over the iPad 2, which considering it's age, I think is expensive.

Im getting the iPad mini for the other half too.
She's using an iPad 1 at the moment thats really showing its age now, with a few software crashes (RAM limitation i think).

She has all of her books and journals for her degree on the iPad 1 currently, and thats all she really uses it for, so the slightly smaller and much lighter form factor will be really beneficial since it gets carried around a lot.

Also the screen is a big improvement on the iPad 1 and 2 screen, ignoring the resolution it has all the benefits that the iPhone 5 screen has over the 4 .. better colour, deeper blacks, etc.

REALLY? I was being a little tongue in cheek, it would be great if they would :)

It seems to vary from store to store, from my few phone calls:

Bullring won't be doing any exchanges, at all, unless its within 14 days of purchase from the date of shipping/release of the new iPad (so almost no one will be covered).

Solihull will be doing exchanges but 14 days from the date of announcement (ie: count back 14 days from yesterday) but only for people who purchased their iPads in a physical store, purchases from resellers (authorised professional like the one in Merryhill or just normal bog standard like Argos or Tesco) must be dealt with though them. Purchases from the Apple online store must be dealt with through their online phone system .. I'm told.

Once it's Retina in a year or two I'll think about it for a couple of reasons:
1) as a home 'remote' or games controller for the Apple TV (either the ATV or the mythical Apple Television) it's a better size than either the iPhone or iPad

2) my iPad fits in my work-bag fine, however when I'm being a metro and out and about with a tiny courier bags, the 7.9" would fit where the current one doesn't

3) that's it

I don't the above is quite enough to justify the purchase, especially considering I'd be wanting a Retina 27" iMac which will probably be out in a year or so...

I bought 2 from HMV 2 weeks ago - think I have zero chance of an exchange - wish I'd bought from the Apple Store now, but nevermind

Free exchange for your 'old' iPad 3?

And there are suggestions that if you bought an iPad 3 in the last 30 days, Apple might swap it out for a new iPad 4.

Cnet reports some stores in the US are telling customers they will exchange mint condition iPad 3 tablets for the new iPad.

As yet, there is no official word from Apple or on whether this will be the case in the UK but it looks like it's worth checking with your local store.
