Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Thiiiiissss.

What do you mean clean install? Either way makes little difference.

1) becuase I've replaced HDD, built a new computer to replace old one and this need to do a clean install.

2) if talking about an existing computer, I would rather wipe the hard drive and get rid of the **** on it.

Allthough reset should be fine for option 2. As long as you can get into windows and it hasn't been totally corrupted.

Up to you. I left everything installed and all games worked perfectly including bitdefender 2013.

The last BIOS update for my laptop was around a year ago, so I wouldn't get those options (acer also doesn't list the BIOS on my laptop as a problem that would stop me upgrading).
As an emergency measure (in case acer doesn't keep up with driver updates), I'm downloading the latest drivers for each device from the manufacturers website, although I've only got the drivers for the soundcard (both drivers as there's a separate driver needed for running sound off the HDMI port), card reader (I think since there were a few different files and I'm not sure if I got the correct one) and LAN (which took a bit of mucking about since I had to identify the correct driver through the device ID) with only the Wi-Fi card (which is a problem since I could only find the LAN drivers on the manufacturers website, and I don't really trust these identifier sites) and the graphics card (this one is really easy to do, and I can leave it until before the upgrade).

Backups of my important data is one of the things I was planning on doing when I decided to upgrade my laptop (I'm also investing in a few more USB drives along with a 4GB drive (which if I remember is the minimum required to be used as an installer for windows 8 ) to avoid having to have the windows 8 upgrade installation data on a DVD).

The removing programs bit is just because I want to test how certain programs install and run in windows 8 (if they do work properly), but comodo internet security is a different kettle of fish as it's been driving me insane after I started using cloud storage systems that comodo seems to keep on classing the files as unrecognised and putting them into the sandbox (but it does that for the catalyst control centre applications every once in a while), and I'm not sure if I should get rid of it completely only to face the wrath of having no internet connection afterwards or just strip it down to the firewall.

You upgraded to Windows 8, but didn't have a previous version of Windows installed (error 0xC004F061)

If you see error 0xC004F061 when you try to activate Windows 8, it means that you're using a product key for an upgrade version of Windows 8 and a previous version of Windows wasn't on your PC when Windows 8 was installed. To install an upgrade version of Windows 8, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC.
If you formatted the drive before the upgrade version of Windows 8 was installed, you won't be able to use your upgrade product key to activate Windows 8. To activate Windows 8, you'll need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 8. For help with the activation process,

I'm still not a huge fan of Win8. I work in IT and have only just rolled out Win7 to our users.

I'll give it a go though and pick up a copy for home use once it's out. I'm even a little bit excited for tomorrow to try it out.
I expect messing about in a VM might not be doing it any justice.

What I'm hoping is that once I'm used to it I'll warm to the change. At the moment though I just feel completely lost at times.

You should try it on bare metal on a machine you use a lot, if not your primary box, for about a month. If you still don't like it then fair enough. It's normal to feel lost at first.

Bought and downloading :D

Was available since I bought a laptop recently so I just logged into the Windows Upgrade Offer website and the Upgrade Assistant and code was just waiting there :D

The Upgrade Assistant seems like the general one if anyone wants it (I just entered my code as checkout)?

Very impressive.

Only 6% off apps on the windows store do not support RT
Almost all applications are available in both x86 and x64 architectures. Only two apps appear to solely target Windows RT (ARM), 31 target only Windows 8 x64 and don’t have Windows 8 x86 or Windows RT support. The gap I first noticed some time ago is still there, however. While almost all apps support Windows 8 on x86 and x64, 6% of apps do not support Windows RT on ARM at this time. This may change after GA when developers can test on Windows RT systems – but it may always stay lower, reflecting the challenges of developing WinRT apps on Windows RT that I have heard from several developers.

where can we buy the surface from when its out?

edit - nvm, just read its online only orders for UK residents.

Definitely would want one with a cover/keyboard. Such a great design. Bit disappointing the lack of 3G but there's so much WIFI about these days when you wanna pull a PC like that out.

Wouldn't be using it for a camera anyway so I'm not bothered about the quality of that as I use my phone for snaps.

How have you done that ? When I try to run the upgrade assistant I get this error : Internal error : error running compatability check. Check logs for details.
