Hurricane Sandy

just drove home from work. its windy and rainy here, no state of emergency yet. supposed to get wild around 2 pm ish. since the yanks like putting their power lines on poles next to trees we'll probably lose power for a couple of days again.

Is that a quote from that same guy last year who said Britain was going to get lambasted by the worst storms ever seen ever in the history of everness, and all that happened was an empty plastic bag blew down the road after someone dropped it....?

WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

much ado about nothing.

i was living in boston during the so called "perfect storm" back in early 90s and it wasn't bad on land. maybe different story for ppl out at sea.

Sandy was classed as a cat 1 hurricane and has been downgraded to a storm. max wind speed is 85mph now and will probably decrease before it hits land. hardly the end of the world.

sure some beach front property may see a surge, some old tree branches may fall to the ground; but they are going nuts in US and overhyping this. election is around the corner, and gov wants to look like it's more prepared than katrina. big difference is that New Orleans is below sea level - NY is not

Most Yanks don't know that other countries actually exist outside the borders of the USA so effectively to them it is the end of the world. :p

Being that this is meant to hook up with a Wintry weather front, does that mean NY is likely to see a mass of snow as well, or just a bucket load of rain?

Your signature is amusing given how ignorant this post was... The storm is still a hurricane (although transitioning to an extra tropical storm at the moment). It is currently strengthening with evidence from recon planes of sustained winds of upto 90mph south west of the centre now (Gusts will be up to an extra 30% on top probably). Due to baroclinic forcing, the storm is quite likely to at least maintain this stength until landfall, if not strengthen a little more. Surge can be a real issue, even from storms which aren't hurricanes... Just ask anyone who lived on the East Coast of the UK or the Netherlands back in 1953 when thousands died from a non-tropical surge event. Sure, the terrain of the East Coast of the states isn't quite as vulnerable as other areas in the world, but a storm approaching perpendicular to the coast in the area and of this strength is unheard of so being cautious makes perfect sense. Previous big hurricanes to affect this area have passed parallel to the coast or inland (Donna, Irene etc) and the surge doesn't have much time to pile up in these cases. Whilst I'm not convinced the worst case scenarios are going to happen here, I expect it to be pretty bad all the same..

The Perfect storm you mentioned never really got close to land either so it's a pretty poor comparison to this storm.

Poor Bounty :( They think 2 people are missing too :(

Looks like my brother needs to duck...

Not yet, but judging by all the photo's been uploaded on my facebook, a lot of places are flooding already and Sandy hasnt even hit them yet, this is just the storm surge preventing rivers from draining..and Sandy is like 2 times bigger than Irene.
