Windows Live Messenger shutting down :(

Am i correct in thinking hotmail e-mail will still work ...Microsoft are just removing the chat program/functionality?

a lot of my accounts are linked to some form of hotmail/live address...

I / We use MSN everyday all day, we talk to hundreds of people on there and it's much better than skype for organisation. I group all my contacts properly, you can kinda do this with skype but it's not the same.

I still use it. Skype seems to be terrible for text chat. And not all my friends are on facebook (that are on msn).

We still use it at work. Although I tend to use Pidgin more often now as messenger went through a period of logging me out for fun!

It's a shame that they're shutting it down, although to be honest it's turned into a bloated pile of rubbish over the last few versions, what with CPU eating flash adverts on every message window and various other "improvements".

I suspect I'll move over to Skype or whatever most of the people I talk to online use, but I certainly won't be moving over to Facebook (I hate that with a passion:p)

Wow I still use Live Messenger, but yeah in the last few years many of my contacts have moved to IRC, FB and Skype only, what a shame as I prefer the interface of Live Messenger :( This is a end of era as I've been using it since 1999

IRC... god, that's an idling competition.

Hmm..

I use WLM for my friends and Skype for work. I like having 2 separate accounts. Forcing me into Skype is going to be a pain. Unless Trillian gets updated to allow connections to more than 1 Skype account at a time?

It's extremely bloated, but I still use it daily to talk to foreign contacts or work colleagues. Will miss MSN, can't believe it's actually going! Queue internet campaign...

Ah damn, we use it to talk to ocuk and one of their competitors for quick and easy purchasing, been a wonderful system for that bar it's inept ability to go through a proxy correctly.

Kind of glad to be rid of it though, just need to wait and see what everyone else starts using before i switch over to something new i suppose..

I use it constantly, so very dissapointed to hear this :(

It's compact and does exactly what it says on the tin. Skype is nothing like as good for text based chat.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

WLM (2009 / v14) is superb and by far the best IM client around.

Not interested on Facebook, I don't really want to add every single random person I meet gaming online to Facebook, not that I even have one.

Might have to switch to Yahoo?

Google Talk is as clean as it's going to get.

Looks like Facebook finally killed off MSN, none of my friends use it anymore but I will never use Facebook. :(

Well no, Microsoft killed MSN when they bought Skype, either by design or not. It makes perfect business sense to amalgamate the two given how much they paid for Skype. It's a shame though as Skypes instant messaging is rubbish, and whilst I don't use the MSN client, I use it to chat to a few good friends via trillian.

ICQ and now MSN woes is me and my antiquated chatting techniques.

Hope Skype improves its text abilities. Can you share photos and stuff on Skype ? Drag and drop like MSN?

Then might I suggest Trillian? You can amalgamate several chat clients into the window and configure them to look essentially exactly as you want. As an example here are two chat windows from MSN and Skype on my computer:

As you can see I have an MSN and Skype conversation open here, and its nice, neat and tidy :).

I've been afraid of using that program since the last time i used it when my msn contacts started getting spammed with advertising messages. Downloaded from Cnet i think too.

May have been unrelated but first impressions are everything...

Shame its happening, but I use Trillian now as that connects to Skype (no video yet), MSN, Facebook, Google Chat etc, and synced across all my devices.

This sucks. I've been using MSN messenger since 2001 and since my fiancée went away to study we always talk on it, in fact have a call scheduled tonight! We will need something else as we find that skype doesn't work as well and we are both more comfortable with MSN/WLM. Also have it connected with facebook so I can use fb chat without opening fb in a browser..

What are the viable alternatives? I might experiment with yahoo IM because I've never used that before..
