Wow I still use Live Messenger, but yeah in the last few years many of my contacts have moved to IRC, FB and Skype only, what a shame as I prefer the interface of Live MessengerThis is a end of era as I've been using it since 1999

It's compact and does exactly what it says on the tin. Skype is nothing like as good for text based chat.
Google Talk is as clean as it's going to get.Pretty much sums it up for me.
WLM (2009 / v14) is superb and by far the best IM client around.
Not interested on Facebook, I don't really want to add every single random person I meet gaming online to Facebook, not that I even have one.
Might have to switch to Yahoo?

Then might I suggest Trillian? You can amalgamate several chat clients into the window and configure them to look essentially exactly as you want. As an example here are two chat windows from MSN and Skype on my computer:

As you can see I have an MSN and Skype conversation open here, and its nice, neat and tidy.
