If they need to they should, if they want to artificially raise Alonso, its a risky game. I said earlier Massa is a good starter and ahead so has a better chance of diving into the first corner ahead of maybe even Webber, if he can back them all up into Alonso thats great.... but he also might end up getting stuck and being in the wrong place and being in Alonso's way. Ultimately Ferrari can't win the constructors, Red Bull aren't going to dnf 4 cars in 2 races, Massa finishing isn't important, Massa holding up people upfront and helping Alonso is, he'll most likely only really factor in for the first stint.
Ferrari will need to prove there is a problem with the gearbox though.
There is nothing in F1's rules that prevents a team from changing a car's gearbox for sporting reasons.
Where does it actually say that?
I only ask out of curiosity, as I had a brief skim through the rules earlier and there was plenty of stuff about the penalties for changing and when the 5 race period starts and stops etc. etc. but I didn't see anything saying the gearbox needed a proven fault to be changed.
I guess it's in a different (non gearbox specific) section of the rules?
Parc ferme regs. To change a part, you have to prove a fault and get permission from the fia.
Any work not listed above may only be undertaken with the approval of the FIA technical delegate following a written request from the team concerned. It must be clear that any replacement part a team wishes to fit is similar in mass, inertia and function to the original. Any parts removed will be retained by the FIA.

However, if a team wishes to change a part during the qualifying session and/or on the grid before the start of the race, this may be done without first seeking the permission of the technical delegate, provided it is reasonable for the relevant team to believe permission would be given if there was time to ask and the broken or damaged part remains in full view of the scrutineer assigned to the car at all times.

i dont like gp in the afternoon, this wait is way to long.
Are you allowed to deliberately under fuel your car?
That would be a way to get massa in front of vettel and spoil his race.
