Where's the abuse that was fired at Vettel for 'cheating' by starting from the pits?

Oh no that's right, this is Alonso...

Ferrari will need to prove there is a problem with the gearbox though.

Incorrect, according to charlie whiting.

Talked to C. Whiting. Ferrari can change MAS gearbox if they want. Don't have to prove there's anything wrong. No info if they'll do it.

Doesn't seem to be a rule saying teams have to prove gearbox has a problem to change it but some engineers believe that's the practice

However, scarbs tweeted:

If unhappy with ferraris gbox explanation the FIA might impose parc ferme rules, make massa start from the pitlane & not shuffle up the grid.

the gearbox and parc ferme rules are in conflict, the fia can step in to prevent systemic or cynical abuse of PFerme

I'm just savouring the irony that it's taken Alonso of all people to join Ferrari for people on here to start being almost sympathetic towards them. I mean, back in '08 you'd have had people on here screaming blue bloody murder about Ferrari being dirty cheating swines for even mooting the idea of swapping out a gearbox to shuffle the grid.

#F1 I hear via good source that Ferrari will indeed go for the Massa penalty. All they have to do is break the seal, not change 'box

I guess that's one way to go about it.

They've all been to busy complaining about non existent ride height rules.

then only a few minutes later:

#F1 Had it confirmed: Ferrari broke seal on @Felipe1Massa's gearbox so a penalty should result!

Its a bit of a positive catch 22 for Alonso, as if the FIA do decide its deliberate manipulation of the rules any penalty for that would go against Massa. A bit like the deliberate overtake in Germany or the crash in Singapore. So long as Alonso stays out of it he will be safe from any punishment even though it is him who benifits.

^But is there not the chance that the FIA will decide that Ferrari are tacking the mick and demote Massa to last without the rest of the grid shuffling up, as has been said here?

Hello everyone.

Sorry if its already been mentioned, but I wonder what the chances are of Webber mysteriously having a gear box issue so that he will take a grid drop, and put Fred back on the dirty side of the track.

Making rules up again?

Ferrari can break the seal or change the box if they wish, nothing in the rules saying the gearbox has to have a real fault.

Not much different to RBR starting Seb from the pitlane with a whole new race dedicated setup is it...

Agreed Mr Men.
It is misuse of the rules though.

I think that the 5 spot grid penalty for gearbox change should be removed, we saw several drivers taking penalties this year and lose out because of it. Its the teams fault if the gearbox fails, so I don't see why the driver should be punished.

Just take 5 places worth of points from their WCC points.
