• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Do we as a forum need a bit more consistency in our recommendations

This is the major disadvantage of communication without eye contact.
It is very easy to read a post incorrectly or understand a post incorrectly.

Edit: It's also very easy to wind people up and post carelessly without fear of a black eye!

this thread is biggest example of that judging by all the deleted posts.

Its probably defeated the object of the original RP.

The answer to the original subject is probably NO because it always ends in a furore.

The green vs red and intel vs Amd arguments have helped me a lot over the years in terms of what's best bang for buck. I don't have time to read up on everything I buy, generally a forum post on here based on "spec me whatever, budget is blah blah" gets you a lot of information very quickly on the different options available at the time.

Even if some posts asking for something specific I feel it is still better for someone to wade in with alternatives, only if it will benefit in terms of performance/cost and it should be backed up with an informative reason to help the OP.

Edit:

That's what I thought as well until recently...

Like mentioning a card that you are constantly recommending to people takes up 3 slots and not 2.

;)

Never recommended a card that big, don't actually ever remember recommending one at all :s

Probably best to ignore him to be honest. No-one really knows what he's talking about half the time.

I also agree with your original point that there's no problem wading in with alternatives if somebody has a set of requirements as long as it's not something like:

"I have a nVidia 3D monitor and I want to play in 3D and looking for a card..."

And then a load of people come in and say: "yeah but 7950..."

Otherwise I think that thinking outside the box can only be a good thing. The worst thing that can happen is the person looking for advice reads what you've said and decided not to. Ah well :D.
