I remember some 12 years ago, so not to long back that anything Samsung they made wasn't up there with the likes of Sony & Panasonic, these days they seem to be leading with nearly everything be it TV, Mobiles ect.

So what has changed because back in the late 90's early 2000's i wouldn't touch anything made by SAMSUNG back then as in my book were mid range at best.

to me it seems Korea is now leading in the Tech front were once it was Japan, even LG are starting to come out with some decent stuff aswell.

No idea how anyone could ever say Samsung wasn't high end tbh.

Samsung Khan ftw!

Korea is growing quite well. Also I remember LG used to make the best/biggest Plasmas.

I was reading a thread on Reddit about this a few weeks back (I think it was an askreddit thread) were a few guys who worked out there were saying that in Japan there became an atmosphere of "do what's proven" instead of rocking the boat and doing something that might fail because of the stigma that would be attached to an individual that might fail in that environment. Wish I could remember the title of the thread so I could link it.

Wouldn't put Samsung up alongside Panasonic in terms of quality to be honest.

Sony on the other hand have gone to making predominantly mid/high end electronics to broadening their product range and in turn devaluing their brand, in my opinion.

I remember the old Samsung TV's & DVD players were crap tbh, never seemed to offer anything decent on these shores that at the time challenged what came from SONY or Panasonic back then.

Lol wonder if they ever plan to build a console to take on both Microsoft & SONY, would be intresting if they did as i sure with the amount of money Sammy has they get the backing from the likes of EA and such?

I imagine they might have some involvement with the Steam Box if Foxconn don't win the contract, or Valve don't do a "made in the US" with it.

I used to do a lot of consulting for Samsung and spent some time at their offices/factories in Korea.

It's a crazy company. It seems that the company employs the whole of South Korea and everyone works 12 hour days as standard. South Korea recently moved from a six day working week to a five day working week - Samsung ignored the move!

They're very quick to pick up on trends (Apple would say copy their rivals) but security at their own sites is insanely tight.

Companies like Nokia really had no chance of competing against Samsung in the long term.

As a Samsung employee (just so you all know my stance!) Samsung is considered a premium brand by our customers almost without exception. (I work in the corporate division, not consumer) This really helps winning projects against other brands.

Looking at the market statistics across almost all b2b products that I work with Samsung is out growing or has already outgrown our competitors.

The constant drive for growth in Samsung is incredible. Its more dynamic than any other company I have worked for and targets are set very high. However the company will back up these ambitions with support staff and funding. The end result is you may not have hit the exceptional goals set by managment, but you will have smashed you competitors in the figures! They are also not afraid to drop things that are not growing well enough to enable number 1 or 2 position.

As mentioned above the work ethic is very strong. Having worked in hq in Korea and witnessed the inside of the digital City its easy to see how this will continue

I wouldn't consider Samsung a 'premium' brand ever. They are mid-level, I've never had a tv that Panasonic didn't surpass. Unfortunately that's not the case when consumers are concerned - if Samsung continues to gain marketshare then that is just bad for everyone.

Because there would be no incentive to innovate, quality assurance goes downhill and they can price whatever the hell they want.

As a customer at consumer level, I would consider Samsung a premium brand these days.
