chain slipping under load = chain/cassette worn

chain jumping out of gears = gears need adjusted

pretty easy to tell the difference

going to do my Threshhold test tommorow, but i have no idea what road i can use as i dont want to be interupted for at least 30 mins

im thinking dual carrige way

I replaced the chain and casette on my commuter thinking they must be worn as it was jumping gears whenever I gave it the beans. Yes the chain had stretched a fair bit and was pretty worn as was the casette, but replacing them didn't fix it, turned out I needed new gear cables and casings as they were all gunked up, worn and stretched.

I think I'm OK on that front. They're less than 6mths old and all internally routed.

Yep, it's definitely load skipping. I used to run my old commuter mtb chains/cassettes with no maintenance or cleaning whatsoever and change them once they started skipping like that. Usually once a year or so.

Ah, so much nicer riding when it's not horrifically windy. 24 miles this evening. Love it.

My gears are knackered. I really need to do something about them. They're skipping and not shifting and shifting too much and all sorts. It's a nightmare. I was hoping I could get away with it and save up for building a new bike next year but I might go ahead with my original plan of replacing some bits on this one in the meantime.

Just managed to unscrew the valve out of my front tyre whilst removing the presta adapter from the stem :/ wasn't even aware you could do that. Tyre deflated preettyyy quickly haha :)

Shouldn't have any probs once I've screwed valve back in and re-inflated, should I?

No, it'll be fine.
I had a batch of MTB tubes that had the plastic caps screwed on tighter than the valve cores. Everytime i put a new tube in and tried to unscrew the cap to pump it up, the whole core would come out  had to get a couple of pairs of pliers to get the cap off the core.
It doesnt cause any problems to take the core out, you need to do it for some things like pouring sealant into the tyre or fitting some valve extenders.

Just use the barrel adjuster on the rear mech to re-index the gears.

This is possibly a general fitness question as much as of cycling

I want to be faster, but i want to lose some weight also, im not overweight by any means but my general fitness is pretty terrible,

so other than turbo trainer which i now have, what else should i be doing (dont want to join gym, so stuff i can do at home.. or running maybe?)

eat less(200-400kcal deficit a day) and cycle harder! push it hard up the hills.. running kills fat too so hey do it if you like it :)

What does the test consist of?

After a 20 min warm up

I have to ride for 30 mins, at a constant cadence of 90-100 at the highest pace i can sustain for 30 mins

after the first 10 mins has passed, i need to start the HR and get the average HR for the last 20 mins

i think ive found a road now that ive ridden before, where its 5 miles long and its usually very empty

I've been really enjoying cycling over the past year, and it's done wonders for my fitness.

Around where I live is fairly rural - bad roads, good opportunities for off-road.
Because of this, I bought a hybrid.

I'm assuming I'm missing out on a lot without a proper road bike?
