I'm expecting my Deore groupset to arrive tomorrow and was going to get the LBS to remove the old bottom bracket and install the new one for a tenner and I'd have a go at doing the rest. I then realised I have no tools other than a few spanners and a set of allen keys.

I can't afford to go and spend a lot on tools so am I right in thinking that all I really need to get is:

1) A cassette tool. I don't need a chain whip tool as I can just use the old bike chain to hold the cassette still.

2) Nothing for the crankset - M590. From the documentation on the Shimano website it looks like once the bottom bracket is in all I need is a my fingers for the cap tool and a set of allen keys for the crank bolts.

3)A chain tool.

Yes and no, yes I have a new pair of HLR Airs on my titus el guapo, but I've only done 1 xc ride on them across fields approx 8miles and down some steps etc and commuting a few times !

They feel every bit at good as my mates bos deville trc riding around on them and doing drop offs, but neither have actually been used in anger as yet.

I can't ride at the moment due to a back injury,but I'm planning a full write up soon.

Sounds promising :) They have be very helpful so far. I guess it will depend on how long Formula take at their end

BOS Devilles are incredible for lightweight air 160mm forks. They are very tuneable to get them just right.

The one thing I will say is, that they feel like every other decent fork out there, when out on a "average ride" - especially on "the car park test". They ride quite high in their travel and therefore will come across as "not super plush" on the low speed side of things (of course you can turn LSC right down if you want a plush comfy ride, while on a pootle).

The forks really come to life when you are riding hard, so ideal for Enduro style racing, where a lot of the timed stages are long DH'ish runs. I was reminded of this again last weekend again, about how fantastic they are, when a mate asked me to tune his in for him. They were blowing through the travel too much on the bigger hits and too stiff on the low speed. Took half a day to get them running spot on.

It's a joy when one or two clicks make a huge difference to how a fork feels and still having another 20 odd clicks to play with :)
 
What gearing setup are most people running on their main bike?

3 x 9 still on the new bike but been out a few times and have never used the big front ring, and tend to be mainly in the middle ring at the front.

Seems pointless just dropping one ring at the front for 2 x 9 but can't see me coping with 1 x 10 or something like that.
 
Main bike - subjective innit? :)

For the XC/doeverythingbike it's 1 x 10

34 F 36 R

Have a 32 F, but haven't bothered putting it on yet as Ive not had the need. Possibly if I got somewhere with mega hills, I'll put it on.

Awfully heavy those.

As for 11 speed, I'd definitely wait until Shimano enters the foray, with their silly low prices on the current 10 speed stuff it would be interesting to see what they counter with.
 
Is it a certainty that they will bring out an 11 speed set. At least with Sram people with hope hubs can convert to xx1, wonder what shimano would do.
 
Talking of 1x10 ... does anyone know a chain guide that can fit my frame?

- I've no ISCG tabs
- I think I've got a stupid BB that doesn't like BB mounts
- My current front mech is a S1 direct mount DMD

I've spotted an E13 XCX but their website claims it's only for E-type or S3 mounts.

I'd be surprised if they dont.
Either that or bring out a 10 speed system with even moar bigger casette.

Have you thought of going 10 speed and trying that casette adapter thing? That will pretty much make a 32t / casette + adapter thing make it feel like you're spinning in a granny ring.
