Had same thing on mine a wile back, slightly bent mech hanger, replaced the chain and cassette too for good measure.
The mech hanger is the bit that connects the derailleur to the frame, varies in size and shape but just look at the thing you're mech is connected to and see if it's straight. If not get a new one.
Not sure whats meant by badly indexed mech but my guess is they're referring to the upper lower limit screw adjustments / cable tension adjustments to make sure the chain is properly shifting through all the gears.

How to repair mech hanger (personally just replace it):

That's awesome, shall have a look this weekend! :)

Anyone been sherwood pines lately? Theres some kool new stuff at the bike park, quite a few new downhill runs with sculpted berms rock gardens, tabletops, drop offs and some little jumps. Was quite busy there earlier, you need to do a good 5 or 6 runs to get used to them though, nearly had an off but somehow saved myself. I think anything over a 160mm is abit over the top but I suppose the more travel the faster ya go! Wouldnt like to do it on a hard tail, right nasty rock garden at the start of the run
worth checking out if your not too distant.

Can anyone help?

Somethings broken on my bike - the chain-set side is wobbly. Has something just come loose and fallen out, or is it broken? And either way, what do I need to buy to fix it! Thanks.....

depends if the remains cannot be extracted. hard to say without taking a peak.

for the sake of the £20 for a new powerspline BB it might be easier to replace than extract the rest.

Been over to Cannock Chase today. We usually ride the Dog & Monkey but have been giving Stile Cop a go recently. Different kettle of fish but great fun and improves your skills no end.

Only thing is pushing back up sucks and I can see myself wanting a more mavity based bike.

Thats the Bottom Bracket that you need Ed, but what size will determine what size you currently have. What bike is it?

If you don't know how to fit it, read up on the net or take it to a bike shop and ask how much they charge.

Cheers Rhys. The bike is a Halfords Carrera Kraken I got about 3 years ago - this one I think http://www.thebikelist.co.uk/carrera/kraken-2009

Am I right in thinking fitting a new bottom bracket required a special tool (I basically only have a socket set and set of spanners)?

Gents, can any one recommend some good cable cutters to get through Jagwire outer sleeve please? (That won't break the bank preferably)

Save yourself a lot of pain and buy some good quality ones, I bought some Park ones a couple of years ago and they've been brilliant, no fraying or crushing.

Any Cyclo cable cutters are good, sold under the Cyclo name or various other companies just rebrand them, a let usually lasts about 6 months to a year in the workshop at once, for normal people thats a life time!

It may not just be BB, it depends where the bolt has snapped, if it has snapped and not just fallen out.

If it's snapped in the crank, the crank might now be stuck on the old BB.
