Anyone have any experience refurbishing carbon? I'm getting some slightly tatty SRAM shifters at a good price and was thinking of lightly sanding down the levers and applying a new satin clearcoat. Any potential issues to be aware of?

Wouldn't bother, every layer is a potential disaster zone
 
rubbish..... a light sanding and clear coat will be perfectly fine and probably make them look brand new!

Id fit some new hoods while you were at it to fully complete the job

That's more or less what I thought since they're a non-weight bearing part. Only downside is the plastic tops where the lever inserts are a little scratched too and possibly less easy to tart up.
 
So I've been to Evans over the weekend, testing and riding. The cost seems to keep going up! Initially settled for a bare basic starter road bike at £450, slowly rolled into £600 for Fuji Sportif 1.5 Compact, then noticed the 1.3 has Tegra and STI shifters, so it became £700 bike only. Adding in accessories, i just hit under £900... Cycle to work scheme or not, it's still a big investment.

Anyone think I've mixed anything? I've got lights from my previous bike. The tyre upgrade for all weather and seems to be well reviewed, is it worth upgrading?
 
Yea id sand the shifters lightly, then super fine wet dry, couple times then clear coat, its fine, post some pics and i can say for sure, but ive done a HANS system for a open top sports car like that before, most likley you wouldn't even go down to bare carbon anyway

That pomp is almost brilliant but the curved forks are so awful!, carbon disc fork and de-sticker the rims and we have a winner ;D
 
I am looking at a Shimano M324 SPD Pedals for the possibility of going clipless when I get into cycling with clipless shoes, whilst still able to use it to commute on my work shoes / trainers.

Anything better to look out for? Or should I stick with a proper flat paddals and get a SPD clipless when I look at upgrading e.t.c.?

Apart from cycling around an indoor track, what's good about fixie? It'll be a bane trying to cycle here in Pontefract!
 
I don't see the appeal of riding fixed except for supposed fitness benefits, but single-speed is far more practical for flat-ish urban commutes of less than 10mi IMO.
