*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I got told I shouldn't be doing deadlifts, squats or pendlay rows without a belt the other day. This person has just passed his level 2 PT thingy and is always reading books about human anatomy.

So glad I have half a clue what I'm doing or I'd be belting it like there's no tomorrow.

Those PT courses must be crap and he is probably just looking at the pictures of the anatomy books he is reading...

Down to 64kg now! Work involves a lot hard labor at the moment which has helped as i just call it 6hrs of cardio half the time :D It has effected the volume I'm able to do at the gym but so far I've still managed 145 squat just missed 150 twice :-/ and 85kg log press nearly 87.5 Dead lift is up thou to 160x4x4 no pain in my backside anymore :D Also thinking about maybe start natty bodybuilding for a year, been speaking to a friend and he says at the moment I'm probably 10% bf maybe single figure. Wouldn't start until September thou and be doing a show in April. :D

This is why I have such a good relationship with all of the PTs in my gym.

Stiv, I think you might do quite well as a BB. Your physique right now is pretty awesome.

Also do you think it's worth me getting a belt for deadlifts/squats?

No, it would be a hindrance more than anything this early on.

I've been lifting just over 5 years and the only belt I've ever used is a dipping belt :p

I do have one but don't get on with them and whilst I can appreciate the purpose & benefits they provide others, I just don't like using one myself. Nor do I look judge anyone that does, each to our own.

I swear people in my gym wear them like it's fashionable or something?!

Apologies for the lazy posting but I'm tired.

Very short session today, I'll catch up with a few bits tomorrow but I'm not overly concerned because I have a mock meet next week.

Squaaaats
barxsomexsome
60kgxsome
100kgx5
120kgx3
140kgx1
160kgx1
170kgx1
180kgx3 PB Boom bitches! Very very happy with that but I felt I had a little more
185kgx2 Also technically a PB. Ambitious but I fell like I might have had a chance if I hadn't done the 180 :)

Long Paused Bench
90kgx3
100kgx3

Didn't have time for anything else, LOL. Very very pleased with the squats, that's a 10kg PB since January :D. On the 185kg Scott grabs it because I shift forward a little but he assures me that he didn't actually help :), I'm still going to count it as 185kgx2 :). Like I said I think that if I had been more confident of my strength and had got straight for 185kg then I would possible have got it, the 180kg definitely isn't a max but it is quite close to it.

Had a blood test and got an elevated liver enzyme which is apparently explained by an abnormally high protein consumption, Doc says typically seen in people who do a lot of gym work.

Perhaps 200g/day for 173lb is too much. Going to go to around 160.

Btw this Leangains thing is definitely working, I'm not even doing the fasting element just sticking to the macros (HC on training, LCHF on rest) and the weight is flying off whilst strength is noticeably increasing each cycle.

The fasting element will see even more come off. I'd read the CBL book if I were you. Cortisol levels are highest in the morning (which helps chow through fat) not disturbing them with insulin spikes (from food) leads to greater fat burning.

Just trying to find a section for you which mentions the effect of small amounts of carbs pre fasted working spiking insulin which can lead to a hypo/hyper (can't remember which). Might explain the crash you got the other day.

Yes, but what does that even mean? I'd guess that that applies to everyone here.

Did the doctor say it was a concern or a danger? Also which enzyme?

No it's purely of academic concern/observation. Apparently it also happens with people who take creatine but I don't.

I honestly can't remember it wasn't any of the ones related to alcoholic liver disease.

I had a whey protein shake pre-workout which contains about 80kcal. I trained at around 7.30am. I had nothing to eat whatsoever after training apart from BCAAs by the hour and then just crashed at 11:30. It might have been that shake first thing in the morning but I'm more leaning towards the fact I had next to zero carbs the day before. Or perhaps my body just doesn't like that style of training, it just doesn't seem natural to do intense exercise fasted and then delay PWO meal by several hours.

I'm also attributing a lot of it to anxiety, I've always been sensitive to signals my body is telling me and I tend to panic when things aren't normal. I suspect in reality it wasn't as bad a crash as it seemed to me.

People constantly act like they will die is they dont eat before exercise. If your body is functioning normally and you are not lean you will have no issues training hard or doing intense cardio fasted. Will you feel ill? yeah probably, will you feel weak and feint? Probably. You might even feel like passing out.

If you do take five sit down get your head together and man the £"$% up and get back on it. There are those that put up and shut up and those that whinge and moan and always have a 'but' for everything they are told. The success stories universally come from the first lot.

I don't have a problem with the fasted training itself, in fact the session I had that day was pretty good - just the early morning fasted training regime on LG IF where you don't eat for several hours after except BCAAs.

Otherwise I agree with you, the concept of having to eat before training is ********.

I do that every day :p. It gets easier once your body adjusts and plenty of water helps too.
