Mobile NFC payments?

Banks are at fault too. Barclays have contactless debit cards so why don't the others?

Its odd as the USA adoption of chip and pin has been pretty poor, most people still use signature cards, yet the have wallet and nfc payments which tbh could be potentialy more insecure

I tried the old hacked wallet account on my Nexus S in mcdonalds, it started the transaction but wouldnt finish it.

I am part of a trial with NFC payments at Voda, I know it is in trial phases at other telcos too. The solutions each network is using actually differs quite a lot, one can be used by everyone, one by NFC handsets only, one is just awfully put together (I jest) but none of them are really polished yet. A few more months maybe :)

Why is it up to the networks? Surely it's an app-side issue with the data sent over any old secure HTTPS connection? Then again, does the app even need to have a data connection? All it's doing is holding and providing card details. It's not like a contactless card has a data connection.

Surely if you knew what the raw data was on a contactless card you could just copy that? My very basic understanding of it is that it's just like a digital barcode/chip?

Its actually not that easy to get an app into the phone that can do NFC payments, you have to have access to the secure element on the phone which isn't readily accessible to the OS layer.

its a hell of a lot more complex than just a bit of data being passed around, theres a whole layer of encryption and decryption. A shared secret is stored in the secure element of the phone (an area thats very locked down on the phones hardware) which is used to check the pin, theres then a communication with the processor to verfy the transaction and all sorts, its about a 5 stage transaction thats pretty damn complex - not done anything with it for about a year so somewhat vague i'm afraid....

Question still stands though; why is it up to the networks?

its not totally, but they are best placed to write to the secure element before the phone ships out to the consumer.

To do that they have to have an agreement with a bank or card acquirer directly and believe me getting a bank to do anything vaguely unusual is a bloody nightmare. They are seriously risk adverse (when they aren't gambling with your money) and new tech like NFC hasn't exactly proven itself to be *that* popular.

McDonalds drive through is the only place I've used my contactless Barclays debit card :o I had to tell the girl behind the counter I'd paid as she was away with the fairies staring at the sky

Lots more places than McDonalds take NFC payments now - including QPR football ground and my works canteen.

The m6 toll takes contactless now which works really well as a usecase - most boots and m&s are converting as well.

My biggest bugbear is the fact that unless you only have one NFC enabled card you have to take the one you want to use out of your wallet - rubbish!

It's already solved, readers which detect multiple allow you to pick the card to use. Networks are in the position because they already have trust, a billing platform, can pre-load the handset, give incentives , you don't have to move the card every time you move handsets, they can have deals with local banks etc.. doing it for the entire world if you're Samsung is quite tricky (but not impossible - they just pick and choose the right battles).

It's not to say it's the only way, far from it, but it is convenient for the banks to offload it to the networks. Banking as said previously, is a stoneage business, they move at a speed glaciers would be impressed by. Compared to mobile telecoms which replaces virtually all it's infrastructure every 6 years and you can see the issues.

A big bump!

Finally Barclaycard to launch NFC payments on Android from November with any NFC enabled Android phone via its app:

Nice to see a bank going forward with this, Google had a chance to start early with Wallet but it was stuck in the US, now they're restarting up with Android Pay but no word on a rollout to other countries.

I believe Samsung Pay is due later this month?

This month in Korea and the USA. No date for us but it is on the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ and will come as a download for the S6 and S6 Edge:
