I dont know, i read them in passing. but id imagine if you search for 'thatcher opinion poll' you would find them.

As I said, its not me who is setting the boundaries, its those who dislike her who have said it many times. I believe there was even a map drawn up and posted in here, but i might be confusing this thread with another on another board.
 
Here you go..found it way back in the thread, posted by someone who wasnt a thatcher fan :o Just an example of what im talking about but not particularly accurate id imagine. Also mentioned in the post that she only cared about people inside the m25 etc.

Yeah, well the map is ********. We're well North of it and the local council was Tory run in the 80s, as were three of the four local MPs. The one that wasn't is shared with the Communist Republic of Manchester.

Yes that's fine, but her policies aren't her popularity? Do you see how there could be a disconnection there, she certainly wasn't overtly popular in polls when she left office. It's a give and take thing, you can't stand too definatevly on those figures and cite 'Britain loved her'.

It's not that simple, and quite probably inflammatory as you'll no doubt find out. ;)

lol. Look, I'm not going to get caught up on it but she was clearly divisive, but I don't think past general elections combined with postmortem polls is utterly conclusive. Those margins can be partly explained by Labour being unelectable..

Because people are talking in near absolute terms with regards to statements of popularity and it isn't that simple, and looking at the longevity of opinion is quite important least of which due to sample size and spread.

Those polls help to demonstrate opinion, but that's not to say it's entirely definitive or that it speaks for all of time. It doesn't, these sorts of things are quite malleable to perception which can change.

It's not an exact science, so it can't be an exact statement of fact. Not unless we all went and voted exlusively on a question such as 'Thatcher, do you like her?'..

The original discussion was sparked because some people make it sound like the overwhelming majority of the country at this time disliked thatcher or thought she was an overall negative for the country. I think the opinion polls prove thats not true.

We're both talking about perception, and you said that some people try to make out that everybody hated her. They aren't, and they didn't anyway.

She's always been popular for a myriad of reasons but equally as divisive I feel.

I think i said some people are making out like she was universally disliked. I dont think they were trying to do so actively. Its just how it comes across sometimes. I just wanted to comment on that.

All of the stuff in the media is being carried out by a vocal minority. I just wish some would acknowledge that. Even this thing with the charts, its like 20,000 sales or something. Its nothing. but the headlines of having that song at the top of the UK charts makes people think the hatred for her is more widespread than it really is.

ditto on the parties and celebrations. very small numbers of people but when focused on, makes the issue seem larger than it is in reality.
 
The one thing that no one can disagree on is that she was likely the last great politician, she actually put herself on the line to deal with issues and for that she deserves respect.

Something i cannot say about anyone since then...unfortunately.

I disagree, I disgree with your pedestal and I disagree with your 'no one can disagree'. We live in a democracy not a dictatorship. Everybody had a right to their own opinion. STOP telling overs how to THINK.

And on the flip side, some people are making out she was a saint, convicted leader and saviour of our nation. Both sides of the coin are irritating. There was some good, some bad, at the end of the day this deceased women was just another career politician, so lets all have cake, save our adulation for the truly remarkable, and move on from this total non-story.

I think he meant great in the sense of being good at which she did, just watch her performances at PMQ's for example.

I can't stand Cristiano Ronaldo, but that doesn't mean I don't recognise he is a great footballer.

In fairness the proposed statue was in her hometown and was vetoed, it's surely then a new/different argument to propose a statue in London to take up the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square which has either not been occupied or only by temporary works. Support for one proposal doesn't automatically mean support for that proposal in all circumstances even when the parameters change significantly.
 
I'm not sure a statue in Trafalgar Square is entirely appropiate. She may have been a great PM and Parliamentarian, but she was also divisive and there are parts of the country, particularly in the north that would find such an epitaph offensive...a prominent memorial like filling the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square doesn't seem fair to them and would be as divisive as the woman herself.

Besides we need to keep that fourth plinth for my statue when I cark it....:p
 
If they do build a statue in Trafalgar Square(which I hope they don't) then at least the pigeons can poop on her forever ;)

Yep, i agree. but theres a difference in that those who support her are not deliberating trying to fiddle the charts to make a political point (although i believe i said someone is trying to respond in kind), nor are they trying to organise street parties to celebrate a death. So you dont see the extremism on the pro thatcher side plastered all over the news.

but yes, those who seek to canonise her are also a little silly.
