I know it has a 4/10 rating on IMDB, I know it tanked hard at the box office, I know its considered a terrible movie, but I had to see it for myself. Dear god IMDB oversold it, never in human history has any film done so little with so much talent, pretty much everybody in it is a known actor/actress, its supposed to be funny, but it just isn't, the only part that is even slightly numerous relies entirely on racism, and that's just sad.
1/10, a genuine contender for worst film I have ever seen purely because it had so much potential its difficulty to see how the writers managed to screw it up so badly.
-------
The Last Stand
Arnie's return, a pretty cool film, very silly but then what 80's action film wasn't, its entertaining, you don't have to think too much and the are a lot of cool one liners and subtle references, IE:
Arnie laughing at the Conan sword in Knoxvilles weapons museum and his deputy telling him "you never know"
Not seen Movie 43, but essentially every film that has its main idea being pack the thing with stars, is always crap, full stop.
The last Stand though, have to disagree both on score, its a generous 2/10, and what 80's actions films aren't silly, well, dozens of them.
"silly" 80-90's action films, you're talking about b-movie Dolph Lundgren films, you have Die Hard and then you have some cheapo should have been tv movie Dolph Lundgren film. The Last Stand is the CGI 2000+ version of a Dolph Lundgren film, and Bruce Willis post 2000 has done 80's style Dolph Lundgren films, the GOOD action films in the 80's and 90's WEREN'T silly, thats the point. I said in an earlier post, there is a point Arnie throws himself over the edge of a building to kill a guy, when he comes out on the roof WITH a gun in hand and no reason whatsoever to not shoot him, the good action films, its not about the situation and the over the top action, its insanely simple to come up with a reason he has to run into the guy. His gun jams, someone else on the roof slams the door on his arm and he drops the gun.
The difference between AWFUL tat, and good action, is the little bits that connect the set pieces, or more importantly, doesn't do every single shot as a gimmick. Spinning the bus around, attacking one at a time for exactly no reason. Every single thing about it is awful, the jumping off the roof would have been marginally less silly if they'd writen a single reason for it, if they came up with a little reasoning for everything, the film would have been massively better(but still not good). I mean, they lose the car because it turns its lights out, and a chopper can't, in any way, keep the spot light on the road as it turns around, its that kind of pure stupidity that makes films bad. Now if this was straight to dvd, or a tv movie, thats fine, but its pretending to be a proper action film with a big budget and big cast.... its a joke.
SO yeah, the problem with current action films is people randomly ignore how crap they are and just say "they are like the old action films", they aren't, they aren't even close to how the old good action films were, but as long as everyone blindly accepts that this is how good old action films are, this is the level we should come to expect, because we(as a people) aren't demanding any better.
Its the really weird attitude that this and the Expendables is exactly how old action was, that means they keep churning out more and more of it.
Die Hard is basically the perfect example, there is over the top action in the first and second, but there was a reason he had to jump over the side of the building in the first film, he was being shot at and had no where left to go... simple reasoning, by the 4th film, there was no reason for anything, the entire film is set pieces with nothing coherant linking them together, its abysmal.
Ryan Gosling and George Clooney (among others) in a US Political Drama. Very accomplished and a nice inside look at the Election process, this is a smart movie with very sharp performances from all. 8/10.
Olympus Has Fallen - 7/10
Had heard this wasn't great, but there was limited options at the cinema. Kind of harks back to the original Die Hard, but loses a point or two due to the over the top initial attack on the White House being just a bit too daft in places. Fairly relentless violence/destruction.
Edit: And a point off for the pro-American cheesiness to it.
Wasn't expecting much, but I was completely wrong. Denzel was brilliant as usual, and Ryan Reynolds was just superb. Good car chases aswell which is always a plus point.
Not just last night - but recently we've watched these films:
Oblivion - I wouldn't class myself as a huge Tom Cruise fan but this was pretty poor even by his standards relying on pretty CGI end of the world graphics to carry the (very predictable) story through the enormous plot holes. I'd give it a very generous 5/10 and those five points are only awarded due to the gorgeous Olga Kurylenko looking as stunning as ever.
Iron Man 3 - I was really looking forward to seeing this having re watched the first two movies beforehand and having pre booked the tickets for opening day. I have to admit I wasn't disappointed - RDJ was as awesome as he usually is, Gwyneth Paltrow looked as sexy as she possibly could (not hard for her). Ben Kingsley portrayed the most unusual baddie you've ever seen (no spoilers here) but the award must go to Guy Pierce who pretty much stole the show in every scene he played. 8/10
Next up for me is the new Star Trek movie. I believe it's released a week today on Thur 09/05 - unfortunately due to shift work I wont get the chance to see it until Mon 13/05. To be perfectly honest I've heard the first viewing of the trailer for Enders Game is to be aired before Star Trek and I'm more looking forward to seeing that than the movie itself . . . . . .
