iRacing

I have decided that I'm naturally just rubbish at racing! This is my first ever racing game and I just can't get the times low. I don't get incidents, but can't come top of the field. My iRating is dropping so I assume I'll be mixed in with the fellow bad people at some point, but on the current MX5 map I can only manage 3-4 seconds slower than the race leads which means I'm always in the Lowe end of the pack :(

Does experience get the times lower or should I give up? I feel with racing games you're either a natural or just not cut out for it!

Practice makes you faster.

I've been playing race sims for years and I'm never going to be super quick. But one thing I've learned is that just doing laps will make you faster. I did some practice will Murray and Spils last week for about an hour and it definitely helped me go faster.

Unfortunately there's no quick way to get quick.

Congrats Murray :)

Also who was it that's racing some Oval stuff? You might be interested in running some of the UK&I Oval series, Wednesday-Sunday evenings in various different cars, good fields, usually able to set help etc

And yep, practice, well just driving really. I've been doing sim-racing on and off to 10 years now (GPL in 2002/2003), and I like to think I've got some pace but there are still many people who comfortably outpace me, and I still improve with the more laps I do, it's one of the things I love about sim-racing in that I can see the improvement as I put more time in.

Your forgetting this isnt just a game, you cant expect to just be the worlds fatest Mx5 driver in 5 minutes. Took me about 2 months before I clicked with Iracing and was able to push for good positions.

10 weeks in the Radical before I could complete a race on the lead lap.
practice practice practice.

o and murry congrats dude, ps hurry up and increase that Irating a little so we can race all togther in the MP4 top split. Not had chance to practice since the other night so I'm expecting you to outpace me now. Going to try do a SPA race later this evening. Would like to do a Radical race at Mosport also but I think theres only me and skill drive the radical here ?

Really enjoying Summit Point, never driven it before. Only had 2 races but already posted a flat 1:24 which appears to be more than enough for the front.

Just got back into this. Tried it a couple of years ago and couldn't really get along with it. Put a bit of time in the the last couple of weeks with a couple of Forza playing mates and it's now clicked into place. Forgot about the week 13 nuttiness, should really have avoided that! Had a couple of really good clean MX-5 races around Summit Point, winning one and got my SR above 4.0 for a D-class promotion. :D

Thinking the Jetta in the Grand Touring thing for my D-class series.

Any recommendations for a wheel at sensible-ish money? Currently using an old Logitech Driving Force (GT3 era Playstation 2 wheel) that I picked up years ago from Morgans for £15! Only 90deg of steering is a bit limiting and the pedals are ... awful. Tempted by the DFGT but it appears to have similarly horrid pedals. Shame the G27 is impossible to find :(

Think I'm just going to have to leave it, tried to put some time into the Skippy this week but I just don't have enough time to learn the tracks and get quick enough for it to be worth it. Got down to a 1.23 on Charlotte but can't do it consistently. I really like the idea of the service etc but think I'll have to consign it to the same place as Eve (love the idea, not enough time.)

Didnt realise the G27 was rare at the moment but just had a look and its sold out most places in NZ too. It is $330 at the moment of 180GBP. Seems the UK prices are over 200GBP if you can find it in stock so people are taking advantage of it

Just got my Class B license :)

Looking forward to Road America in the Skippy this coming week.

Nice one.

I'd stick with Mazda to get your D licence.

Most recommend the DFGT or the Thrustmaster Ferrarri 430. Depends on how much you want to spend. You can get the Thrustmaster T500 for £229.

Try sticking with the Mazda, the Skippy is a difficult car to drive. Especially if you move up to it immediately after getting your D licence.

DFGT has horrendous pedals and poor shifter buttons, I preferred the F430 as a budget wheel.

If you've got more money I now run a Fanatec GT3 rs and its fantastic, feels like a real steering wheel.

The Fanatec GT3 RS v2 is another wheel to look at, seems like a good wheel but I'm still not 100% sure I'd trust Fanatec from a quality control/customer service perspective, although they seem to be much better so probably OK.

With the Logitech G27, I believe they've effectively been discontinued and hopefully Logitech will be bringing out a replacement 'soon'

And then there's the Thrustmaster T500 which is meant to be a great wheel, but no load-cell on the pedals which for the price is a bit of a shame, still not bad pedals (I believe around the Logitech G series pedals), but not as good as the fanatec clubsports

I'm a bit put off the Fanatecs due to the amount of problems the xbox lads have with them. Permanently whistling headsets, voice comms disconnecting mid-race and mid-race wheel resets required. I know one guy in the states who has bought his third as he can't wait on the turnaround times for a repair!

OcUK have the T500 for £330 which is as cheap as anywhere I can find, they also think they might get the G27 back in (but can't say when!). The only place I can find the G27 new is £270 delivered, and decent ones are making nearly that on eBay. :(

The situation for Fanatec is worse in the states to be fair, they have to go through distributers I believe rather than Fanatec directly which sometimes isn't great.

It seems like there is a distinct quality control issue at Fanatec, recently 3 or 4 of the UKI Oval drivers bought the GT3 RS wheel, and onehad to send it back pretty much immediately, that's not a great record really. But the handling of customer support when direct with Fanatec does seem to be better than it used to be, but then do you want to be in that situation at all?

I have considered upgrading, my G25 still works fine after ~5 years of abuse, and the Fanatec is an option, but tbh I would probably want to make sure I had the working G25 'just in case' when using the Fanatec, whilst now I'm happy trusting the G25 not to break.

I've used the T500 wheel briefly, but not the pedals (the guy had CST pedals iirc, which were awesome), it is a very nice wheel, stronger FFB but with fidelity as well, with the G25 I've found if I crank up the FFB you just lose feel if that makes sense, not really heard many horror stories of QC/CS from Thrustmaster and I'd expect to trust them a bit more really (plus the UK based retailed rather than German company...)

I'm considering getting CSR Elite pedals for the load cell brake. Everyone seems to highly recommend them.

I've got the Clubsport 2's and they're brilliant, better than any wheel I've had (if that makes sense).

I literally can't use a traditional pedal set now, it feels so wrong.

The T500 has been as low as £229 on OcUK and has been £199 at a competitors. For either of those prices it's a bargain.

I paid the full £429 for mine about 15 months ago and even at that price compared to a G27 they are worth the money.

I am tempted by the top end Fanatec wheel and pedals, but that's going to cost me over £1000. I might get the pedals first and see how it goes, but that won't be until next year now I've got a wedding to pay for.

There are rumours of an official load cell add on for the T500 pedals that might be worth considering, should it appear.
