My girlfriend lives in Manchester, her and the neighbours park their cars on the side of the road (no driveways). About 4-5 weeks ago a car appeared to be parked there (Audi S3, W reg - i think).

She's friendly with the neighbours, and none of the neighbours know who owns the car. One of the neighbours has contacted both the council and the police to report the car as possibly stolen. The car in question is still taxed, but has had a puncture and not moved in the 4-5 weeks. They've no idea if the police have come to check the car out, or even if they've tried to contact the owner.

Is there anything else they can do?

im sure it seems odd but if its still taxed and parked legally (with or without a puncture) unless reported stolen the police wont care too much

I had the same problem when I lived in Stanmore a couple of years ago. Came home from work one day and a car parked right outside my house and it was there for 2 months. Being military I reported it after it had been there for a few days without moving. The police came and checked it out but as it was taxed they couldn't do anything. They told me a couple of weeks later that the owner had gone to visit family in india and parked his car there so he didn't have to pay parking charges. He just jumped on the tube to heathrow. I let his tyres down though :-)

Agreed what can the police or council do if assuming it is still legal, ie taxed, MOT and insured?

I had a flat tyre the other week when I was away from home for 7 days and the car left at home.

I would have been horrified if I would have found it towed in my absence for something that was completely out of my control.

All you can do is monitor it until the tax or insurance has expired. Try ask MiD website to check insurance.

So he parked legally on a road (that you dont own and have no right over) but because he inconvenienced you in such a minor way you decided to cause him a potentially massive problem, i just hope he arrived back around 3am and had a very noisy compressor in his boot to re-inflate his tyres (unfortunately i doubt it)

Bless you, everything must seem so clear up there.

It isn't though.

Report a suspicious package in the boot and that you saw a bearded turban wearer near the car, one controlled explosion later and problem solved!

What does that have to do with anything?

It means he is considering his own personal security.
Aww bless that you've no idea what he's talking about, but there was a time when in certain parts of the UK a great deal of people looked under their cars before getting into them, and you didn't have to be military to do so.
I would say new recruits are given some sort of briefing regarding this, they certainly would be if they live in Northern Ireland.

No. It's taxed, it can be parked anywhere as long as it doesn't cause an obstruction. What does it have to do with your girlfriend or her neighbours? I don't mean that question to sound confrontational, only literal - what's it got to do with them?

tell her to call non emergency fuzz again and report it too.. after enough calls they will check it out, it would be very simple to find the owner.

Not being military I would have reported it too....
