I think it's the fans doing this more than anything tbf, as people have said. The consumers have put Valve on such a high pedestal that things like this are expected of them, people expect them to keep us in the loop and to be this super consumer-friendly perfect company, when in reality they are a business. If Steam is bringing them in the kind of money where they don't even know what to do with it, creating the next game to put food on the table isn't exactly a top priority.

They are the most successful digital retailer on the web AND developers/producers. The former holding more precedence than the latter for reasons I'd hope wouldn't have to be explained (pssst... it's money!).

Imagine if a TV show (let's say Breaking Bad) decided to end a series on a cliffhanger, then just stop making it for five years without any information...there would be outrage!

I love Valve's games and what they've done for the PC industry cannot be underestimated but as game developers they are frustratingly inefficient. How many staff do they have? Are they all working on DOTA2?

Has it really been nearly 10 years since Half Life 2 was released? I feel really old now

No, closer to 9.

It's been five and a half years since GTA4, there were 12 years between Diablo II and Diablo III, nearly 7 years between Warcraft II and III long periods of time between games is not unprecedented. Obviously those cases are a bit different because at some point information started being released about the next game, but the point is that a large period of time passing doesn't necessarily mean it's not happening.

Personally, I suspect Steam are just keeping the announcement to coincide with something else big.

Almost every cancelled series ever, almost.

Cancelled is quite different though, if Valve had come out and said "we don't want to make more Half Life" Then we all would have been angry but would have got over it. Instead they've just made an immensely great game in sales and user reviews....and then just stopped. I can't think of another example quite like it. Not every game needs a sequel but what other immensely successful series has just stopped in the middle of the story? (excluding bankruptcy etc)

I still need to complete Half Life 2 + Episode 1 & 2.

Such fantastic games and is easily in my top three games I have ever played.

I recommend modding HL2 :

http://cinematicmod.com/

Eugh, used this mod for 10 minutes before deleting it, all of the character models are horrible and everything is shiny.

Puts me in mind of an over-modded Skyrim with those stupid mods than turn all females into giant assed amazonian bimbos and their armor into 4 square inches of fabric and metal.

You can turn the ridiculous character skins off by the way. I did :)

Since it's taking so long, I can only assume there has been a sea change to the format, like some of the rumours e.g. half-life Skyrim-style etc. If it ever is released I'm sure it will be worth waiting for.

The character modes are the tip of the iceberg as to why I dislike that mod, the absurd music, the fact that outdoor everything looks washed out, inside colours are massively oversaturate and everything is overly dark.

Also anyone who thinks you should even have the option of doing this to one of the best games ever made deserves to be kicked in the face.

HD textures I can get behind, honestly the game never really looked that great, however the Cinematic mod is almost vulgar in the way it goes about it. Again I liken it to that part of the Skyrim modding community who thinks good graphics means looking at the world through a film-grain filter at shiny trees you can't see because of terrible DoF and lens-flare of all things.

Subtlety is always the best option.

So this popped up in the TF2 update to Surgery Simulator.

The nine dots are planets, the 7th planet being Saturn from which the arrow is pointing to the question mark. Filling that in to the blanks above, the box then contains Sa. People have been tying this in to the Korean update to HL2 and, in Korean, Sa apparently means 4.

So, there you have it, HL4 is coming!

Edit, no. Reddit is wrong, Uranus is the 7th planet giving Ur and there's only eight planets left after the destruction of Pluto.

Edit 2: Also, the dots don't really match with the planets, the sizes are all over the place, unless that first one is the sun which means that they do only have eight planets and we're back at Saturn. So hurray for HL4!

Edit 3: Ignore the edits.

once they finish the new source engine it will be made.

they tested the water with cs:go, now there upgrading it only then will new half-life be out.

they wouldn't release half-life on a average engine.

they want it to be epic. now just wait!
