**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

You seem to be more bothered by my choice than I am about Kinect being plugged in. :p

I'm just trying (and failing) to understand what's so different between a camera that's plugged in, yet off, and a camera that's not plugged in. Bar some weird kind of phobia of cameras, I just don't get it. I'd understand if it was an always on requirement that some people wouldn't like it, but if it's off, I never saw or understood why some people would have a problem with it.

Each to their own I guess. I'll just never understand some people :p

Do you really need it explaining?

If it was possible to be turned off (completely i mean..which i have my doubts) then there's absolutely no reason for the system to not function without it connected; which is what they've now decided to do.

People are right to be concerned with privacy (digital and otherwise), and having you insult them because of that isn't particularly mature.

You're either being ignorant or playing Devil's advocate.

I'm not being ignorant, or being Devil's advocate. MS said it could switched completely off. Now, maybe I'm being naive, but I took that to mean it could be switched completely off. They were very clear on that. So, assuming they were telling the truth (and as mentioned, if they weren't, they'd be opening themselves up to all kinds of legal trouble), there's is absolutely no difference between the Kinect being switched off in the settings, and unplugged from the machine. Off is off.

And I'm not insulting anyone. I'm merely trying to understand a viewpoint I simply don't. If I want to insult someone, I'll be much more blatant about it ;)

They will probably release a console-only pack for about £329 and then a Kinect on its own for about £150 or something silly to justify their £429 pack. Covers all bases then.

Whichever way they do it, there will always be someone you know who calls in Kinetic :D

I've given it plenty of thought, and I don't think it's top stuff, not if it means bulking up the controller to make room for more buttons.

No, as I said I don't feel the controllers need any more buttons.

but putting your personal feelings aside it would be top stuff to have two extra buttons and no bulk yes? (last time i will ask promise :) )

No, I don't. Like I said, I've had no problems in all my years of gaming. Sounds like PC gaming would suit you better tbh.

no problems with spotting on bf3 whilst left stick pushed all the way left?

so just because i want a couple of extra buttons(something that the ds4 has) or not willing to have r3 as reload(a option i have never seen in any fps games in my time) i should go pc?

lol are you serious? you sound like don mattrick "if you want a controller with a couple more buttons go pc";) or i could go ps4 instead.

People are celebrating a sony victory way too early, my gut instinct is that psn will remain the same inferior service in regards to games being laggier on ps4 multiplayer than they are on 360 only difference being now you have to pay.

A classic example is umvc3 it's nigh on unplayable lag online on ps3 but playable on 360 and it's not the only game where the multiplayer is better on 360.

The jury is still out people will gravitate towards the system with the better online just as they did this generation.
I like fighting games and if they are laggier on ps4 than xbox one i'll be getting an xbox one.

this is my main concern too, my feelings are its going to be laggier too as ive just come off bf3 on the box and started on ps3 and i noticed lag, saying that when i opened some ports its become more or less spot on but still i'd say xbox is superior. if this is the case with next gen then i will definitely pick up a x1 much much sooner and use it as my main gaming machine

Because MS have stated many times that the Kinect is an integral part of the system. They are allowing people to turn it off or disconnect it so that the paranoid nut jobs can be certain it's not watching them fap while eating quavers or something.
LOL :D:D:D Sig worth quote right there...

I don't like camera's, plenty of people don't like them. Why should I have to have one pointing at me when all I want to do is play a few games. Shove it behind the TV you say, that's just stupid when I could ... not plug it in!
Do you have a mobile phone? Does it have a camera, microphone and data connection? If it does can you detach it or do you trust it's not broadcasting video, audio and your location back to the NSA 24x7?

Some interesting Xbox One news...

IGN said:
Just like PC gaming, overheating has the potential to cause problems with any console. And despite the array of ventilation holes cycling air through a system, hardware designers have to think of all the variables--like people stacking consoles for some inexplicable reason.

During an interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft's general manager of console development, Leo del Castillo, revealed how the Xbox One will avoid thermal meltdown. While the system's fan will ramp up to maximum if the Xbox One is running too hot--and the noise will hopefully remind you about the towel you left draped over the console--the next Xbox can also regulate its own power.

"One thing that we have more flexibility with the architecture of the Xbox One, is that we can dial back the power of the box considerably," said del Castillo. "We had a little less flexibility with the 360. And so basically, if we couldn’t dissipate the heat, there wasn’t a whole lot of leverage we could pull to keep the heat from being generated, so we had a limited amount of time before it just shut down. Xbox One can actually dial it back to a lower power state, so low in fact that it can [be] in a mode that uses virtually no air flow."

What's not immediately clear is if this self-regulation will happen during gameplay or just non-gaming apps, as a decrease in power would likely mean a decrease in performance during graphically intense titles. Regardless, del Castillo says the Xbox One will notify the user of impending problems with some type of notification.

Sounds good to me, as long as it doesn't dial the power down during gameplay. It would definitely be a good thing if it popped up with some notification that the box is overheating. It could be enough time for you to save your games to the cloud before the box dies. Hopefully it's not something any of us will face though.

dont think microsoft are stupid enough to let it happen in gameplay, i'd prefer noise over decrease in power, cant be that loud can it and the game sounds will mask the fan too.

on second thoughts maybe they are expecting it to happen in gameplay, i dont see the console getting hot managing apps and watching tv/movies browsing through xbox content.

correct location is a must for either console

Surely if it gets too hot (i.e. too much for the max fans to cope due to some major issue) it will clock down during gameplay, although I'd expect an on-screen message telling the user to immediately go back to the dashboard first where it will then enter a low power state. This would possibly also be automated after a minute or so in case the game was paused/user not present. It's preferable to just having the console melt itself to death while you are fragging n00bs in BF4 :p

I'd be surprised if thermal issues plagued this gen though, unless you are doing something ridiculous like playing on an open fire.

The new Xbox is meant to be whisper quiet from one of the hands on I read, so assuming that's true, and I think we'd all notice the increase in fan noise before we got to the point of warnings on the screen (dependant on game volume obviously).

Agreed, MS are becoming more experienced with each console they release, so you'd expect it to be better. Saying that, my original Xbox was pretty much an unbreakable beast, that never skipped a beat in all the years I used it.

From the pics of the Xbox One internals it seems they've gone all out on the cooling this time around to avoid the thermal issues of the past. They've got a big chunky heatsink in there, a large fan, and a nice big open case.

If any console is going to have heat problems it'd be the PS4 with its very slimline case, which doesn't leave a lot of room for a decent cooler, not to mention it's GPU will be pulling more power due to the extra shader count. There doesn't look to be room for a big standard heatsink and slow moving large fan. I can see Sony going with a 'blower' style cooler, if so the PS4 could be a fair bit louder under load than the Xbox One. However, I don't think there are any pictures of the PS4 internals yet, so we'll have to see what they've come up with.

Looks nice and roomy in there, which is good for me. People have criticised it for being big, but I'd rather it were bigger if it means a nice quiet console that won't overheat. Space isn't an issue under my TV so it's not a problem for me.

Xbox One cooling is pretty much the same as the current Xbox slim, so they have nailed that design as I doubt the new Xbox will be putting out much more heat with the newer, more efficient chips. It will be very solid.

The size of the PS4 has been dictated by the low heat/power ratings, if it needed to be bigger they would have made it so but they haven't felt it necessary.

Both consoles internals are fairly similar, but Sony seem to be able to create a better cooling system like with the PS3, which possibly explains the physical size differences. I'd be surprised if it isn't an evolution of what they use now.
