can you boil an egg?

Confused why you guys are worried about cracking the shell?

Just boil the water, plop it in, 3 mins max and take it out, job done. Don't let it sit too long in it's shell afterwards or it will continue to cook itself.

Let's not be nasty to the OP here guys.

Why is everyone so worried about cracking the shell? If cooking for myself i just pour boiling water in, I'd rather not wait for cold water to boil, especially with an electric cooker. After that 3 mins+- for soft, 5 for hard and put the entire pan under the cold tap, this is a gentler temp fall than just dropping the egg in cold water (less chance of cracks) and stops it from overcooking. I only get a crack in about 1 in 5 eggs this way and have only once actually had any egg leak out.

The Heston Method (probly already variants of this up there somewhere!!):

Place the eggs in the smallest pan available and only add enough cold water to cover them. Put the lid on the pan and place over the highest heat possible.

When the water comes to the boil, remove the pan from the heat and wait for 6 minutes.

After the time has elapsed, remove the lid and carefully remove each egg. Cut the top of each egg before serving in egg cups.

Works for me every time!! :)

Agreed, but Poaching eggs I find is a bloody nightmare without a dedicated pan (I know I fail!)

Boiling eggs is child's play tbh.

the cheat method I use:

line a ramekin with a square of cellophane and oil up the centre a little, crack the egg into the cellophane and gather the corners together, twisting to seal it up.

place egg wrapped in cellophane into boiling water and hook corners over the edge of the pan. Leave in boiling water for 3 min, rinse under cold water, unwrap and rub viciously all over body (or eat if your that way inclined)

Don't listen to all these fools telling you to boil water on a hobb for your boiled eggd, OP.

All the smart modern people use a microwave to boil their eggs these days, no water required, just pop it in and set the time.
