The graphics card market is one of the most obvious examples of how strong competition in the market helps the consumers :)
 
If nvidia had waited until the non-reference 290X cards were out, this would have looked desperate.

They've done a smart move (albeit forced) by cutting while AMD's only got a noisy cooler on the competition. It goes to show how good the 290X GPU is though, that nvidia is basically undercutting AMD for once.
