*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

Nexus appeals to the enthusiasts too - so yes there would be a large market IMO, esp @ £399.

Is the nexus 5 better than the S4 which is around the £400 mark?

I know the answer to that is subjective but I think most would simply buy the S4 at that price point.

The loudspeaker for one is really really poor and the positioning is woeful on the nexus 5.

Point being if you wanted more memory and are willing to pay £400 then the S4 already has that market covered.

This way they aren't directly competing with any other high end phone by keeping costs low, they simply are so much cheaper than the competition it makes them easier to distinguish.

I find the white nexus 5 very slippery in the hand. I prefer the aestetics (bit different to the monolithic black slab look) but the white versions polished sides don't give a huge amount of confidence when using on the go, particularly pulling it in and out of pockets. How's the black version compare?

I've ordered a cheap case from Amazon to tied me over.

I've gotten one to replace my S4 and to be completely honest there's nothing I've found about the N5 that makes me think this is crap compared to the S4, the loudspeaker sounds fine to me for the limited use it gets and according to android central it seems there's something going on in the software that is making it sound bad for some people depending on the app that is controlling it at the time so it should be an easy fix.
I much prefer the feel of the N5 which is a massive plus point as it's where a phone spends a lot of it's time and I don't miss the software stutter on the S4.

The black version is spot on the soft grip back and matt plastic sides mean it feels safe in your hand, you'd have to work pretty hard for it to accidentally slip out of your grip.

If your using a case what does it matter how slippery it is as it will be in the case surely? therefore black/white makes zero difference.

The official bumper case for £25 (expensive) looks much better than the White nexus 5 and can be used with either phone, in fact I have contemplated getting it for my black one to convert it to a white nexus 4 as well as add protection but imo far too expensive.

Personally I have just ordered a cheap black silicone case (white ones get filthy so buy the official one or go black) and using that for when I will be out of the home, inside the home I use my bugatti leather pouch which I used with my Nexus 4.

This is why I think the black is better, because I use cases I can change the colour to whatever I want anyway, so if I wanted white i would get a white case.

Changed to 'ART' in the developer setting, but what was a 4 bar H signal, is now just a 4 bar signal. Will have to switch back, obvs

Well I have been using youtube mainly and the loudspeaker is terrible especially in terms of positioning.

I can accidently mute the phone by covering the lower left hole, the right one has zero sound coming out of it.

Makes you wonder why that second hole is there in the fist place, purely for show or to pretend it has 2 speakers, etc.

Imo that is pretty poor form.

It's not blazing but it's more than fast enough for most files, I've just plugged my N5 into my works pc and it gets picked up fine so it looks like it's down to the mismash of random phone drivers left on my home laptop.

Yep, I think my laptop has the same problem. I just plugged the N5 into my Sister's laptop and it picked it up immediately. She doesn't have any mobile phone device drivers installed on her laptop.

I've installed Wifi File Transfer and it's performing admirably enough so I'll stick to that for now.

You don't need to be able to see the phone in "My Computer" for the Fastboot and ADB connections to work I unlocked and rooted mine the other day from my laptop.

That's good to hear, I was kind of worried as the whole point of having a Nexus phone is to unlock the bootloader, root it and install custom roms, kernels etc!

Thanks for your help Mate!

You're quite correct, but some people like to not use cases generally speaking. So it's good to know with the black version you don't need one to prevent the odd accidental drop test. :)

No worries, I did find I had to flip the transfer mode over to PTP on the phone though to get fastboot to pick it up I think.

I just got a black 16Gb version to replace my S2, I was running cyanogen mod on the S2 running 4.3 - why can't I remove the stupid Google search bar on the home screen? this is annoying

Because it's a built in part of the launcher, you'll need to change launchers to do it.

Been waiting to use my N5 since release [waiting on Sim card, only took 4 days to be delivered :(]

Whats the bad things about hangouts sms app? I only text a few people individually, so will it be fine for me?

I'm finding it really poor. With location and Google Now disabled, it's been off charge for 2 1/2 hours with 3 mins screen time and it's at 96%. This is better than it has been...

2 hours after this it was still on 96% so definitely improved with Google Now disabled. Since then I've enabled ART which after the reboot hammers the phone, and used Endomondo for 40mins to track a bike ride (that nearly killed me, I am so unfit!), and it's now sat at 72% which it has been for over an hour. So things looking up for standby at least!
