Manufacturer preferences

What do you mean, 'quality in what way'? The plastics feel and look nicer, the trim is of better quality, typically instead of cheap plastic 'metal look' trim items, they could use real metal, better quality leather, better quality feeling switches, a neater looking and better functioning dash i.e. control layouts, probably a quiter cabin when on the motorway.

The list is endless, and tbh the Mondeo isn't exactly cheap ourdays.

So a few better touches inside the cabin justify the big price differences? What about the rest of the car? Thats why I asked quality in what way, as its rather vague to say the car is more quality or better than the other, as there are more than one ways of being better.

Whilst I agree with you that an Audi will have higher quality materials used inside than a Ford, I can't agree that it somehow justifies the price difference. Of course you would expect some price differences as one is using materials that cost more and are worth more, but then a car has many other characteristics too.

I am basically a bit of a snob and I only really lust after German and English cars (and have a bit of a thing for over the top American stuff). I am on third bmw in a row but have a soft spot for Nissan as had trouble free motoring with one for years.

Mondeos depreciate heavily, more so than anything German. So why are we using this as a benchmark on quality? If you spend 10k on a Mondeo that could quickly turn to 5 grand in a couple of years anyway. Someone considering a BMW or Audi wouldn't even contemplate a Mondeo, that's just how it is.

Depends on what part of the market they are buying into, anyone using their brain would probably choose a Mondeo over a 120/320d as they'll get much more spec for their money, those buying into the more expensive models higher up the range will sway toward the German car because Ford don't yet really have a car to rival those.

because Ford isn't a premium brand. Let's face it if someone has cash to spend and wants a perceived premium product they will go for the big brand name, Ford is like McDonald's, your not gonna consider McD's when your thinking of Dining at a Posh restaurant.

Don't ask me, I'm not them. In the last 5 years people that would settle for old Nokias now need to have iPhones, people that would shop at Next all of a sudden decided they need Superdry and Jack Wills clothes, drink £4 coffees instead of having one before leaving for work and people happy with £5 headphones now spend £200 on a pair of Beats. People that would once be happy with old Escorts and Fiestas now find themselves driving around in premium German cars on PCP deals. That's not to say some German stuff isn't overpriced because it is, but it is better than Ford stuff for the most part, not that some of the knuckledraggers that buy the stuff can actually appreciate any difference in quality when driving to Nandos or when they're dropping their foul offspring off at school.

Quite a drastic leap between the two, BMW would be more like Nando's if Ford is McD's :D

One is a 1.6 and the other is a 1.8t FSI, are the two cars even comparable on any level?

Yes,

Both has 120 BHP, both have A/C, both have MP3 and bluetooth, 17" alloys. They are actually very comparable which is why I picked it as an example.

this is the best assessment of modern society I have read recently.

I have no brand allegiance.

things that appeal to me as a car enthusiast are:
performance & handling
aggressive or unique styling
excitement or eventfulness of the drive

predominantly i like jap stuff as it ticks most of the above, but i would just as soon have a ****head green Focus RS as an EvoX.

I wouldnt choose an audi for example as i think they're a bit plain and unexciting.
its nice to have a talking point other than the year of the reg plate
