Asus T100 owners thread

Keep going backward and forward between this and a android tablet, cant make my mind up......

Really depends what you intend to use it for. I got rid of my iPad for this, and couldn't be happier.

Though i only used the ipad for tvcatchup and web browsing. And i've still got my Note 2 for quick searches and stuff like that.

The touch/tablet version of internet explorer isn't quite as good as some of the app browsers on android and I've not managed to find anything better, but it does work quite well once you've adjusted to it a little bit. Plus it works just like a PC browser, so no issues with flash or youtube embedded videos, etc. Normal PC browsers don't work so well with touch due to not having pinch zoom and having small selection button/links. Obviously when using as a laptop with a mouse the normal browsers work perfectly fine.

The big benefit for me is having the keyboard and mouse, and the fact it will stand up on its own, so i don't have to hold the damn thing. It also runs all my pc programs, so i don't need a separate Laptop for working on, and i'm even using it instead of my Home PC with no real draw backs (connected into a 24" 1080p monitor). The 2GB of ram is a little limiting, i've got AutoCAD 2013 running on it fine (4GB recommended), but it does start to get a little slow when dealing with large drawings and demanding commands, not so much that it is a problem though, But I have installed an older version in the hope this will improve it, could just be the CPU though.

I do tend to us it as a laptop more than a tablet, maybe if there were more apps i might use the tablet form a little more. But generally it's in laptop form and i'll just use it as a tablet when in bed watching tv/youtube or browsing the web.

Battery life is also great, I've not noted the total time between charges, but it must be getting close to 9-10 hours of general use, browsing, youtube, tvcatchup, and a little work. Screen brightness is normally turned down to minimum when in bed though, certainly much better than my fiancee's new Lenovo Flex 15 which is rated at 9 hours and probably only last 3-4 hours.

I just need to find a longer usb cable now that will allow me to charge it whilst using it as the supplied cable is only about 1m long

Posted this on another thread but will copy & paste here to :D. I too am in the market for a cheap Baytrail 2 in 1 tablet/laptop.

I really like the Dell Venue Pro 11 + battery keyboard but their sales rep said the absolute best price he could do for me was £606 (incl battery keyboard). Much more than I had expected and there's no point spending too much when whatever I buy will be superseded in a year or two by 2in1s with Baytrial successor CPU, hopefully with 1080p minimum, M2 memory (not eMMC which is limited), ac wifi, faster charging etc. etc.

So I would rathersave money (£250!) to go for the Asus T100. BUT, that 32gb is ridiculous. It would have to be 64gb minimum. I know you can add an SD card but I really want 64gb as the base amount. I've read that the 64gb version won't come to the UK though as Asus research found the UK market didn't want it - WTF?! Interestingly there's a 32/64gb + 500gb HDD version in south east Asia apparently (Singapore I think). That'd be even better. I'm happy to order tech from abroad but I'd much rather a UK keyboard layout & plug. Boggles the mind that a market as big as the UK doesn't warrant 2 models... Get excited by new product news and when they come out, the price is higher or the specs aren't available in UK. Painful.

You can find 64gb versions of the Asus T100 on ebay delivered from the US or Taiwan or wherever for about £305 incl. shipping. You might need to pay 20% VAT import duty obviously but my phone didn't attract it when it came from Hong Kong.

Then you could install a UK keyboard hopefully. You can get the UK version here:
http://www.asusparts.eu/en/Asus-90NB0451-R30280#

It's €65 delivered which is about £51.
I rang them up, it is literally just the keyboard though, not the whole dock, so one would have to be comfortable opening up the dock to replace it... Then you'd have 64gb for £355 with UK keyboard (but foreign plug and warranty).

So I dunno what to do. Wait for a possible 64gb version (poss in new year)? Or hope that something else comes out? One possibility is Acer. If they update their W510 (clovertrail) with Baytrail, that could be cheap, similar and potentially awesome. But again, no word yet....

Have you tried Firefox Metro? It isn't fully stable yet but I imagine it would be mostly usable. It's looking like the final release version will be out Q1 2014.

Just read up on changing the default location for metro apps to be installed which will be usefull if anyone is interested

Makes it a little more tempting to get one now :) Seen the 64gb ones and the ones with the 500gb hdd advertised on the german rainforest but not in stock at the moment, anyone ever placed an order through the german site?

Really considering one of these to replace an Acer Aspire netbook. Where is the cheapest place to get one? Would it fulfill the tasks that the netbook does. The Acer is sluggish but, useable.

If only we could get a UK warranted, and keyboard 64GB model i'd buy one today!:(

Dare i risk a personal import?

How annoying would a US keyboard be in use? Which keys are different? Just £/$ or multiple keys?

I guess as i'll undock the keyboard for periods too its an even lesser impact...

Anything else to consider beyond warranty and keyboard?

I 'think' the @ " $ tend to be different; Im from the states and prefer us keyboards but my dell laptop has a UK one ...

Im debating about this thing also ... was checking out the dell and ya might be a bit better but much more expensive ...

Had a play with a Venue 11 Pro today and compared it to the T100 in 3DMark to see how the Z3740 stacks up vs. Z3770.

Z3740 actually comes out 11% faster in graphics performance, Z3770 29% faster in the CPU Physics test.

That's a clincher for me then. Better gfx on the Asus is surprising!

Now I need to procure a 64GB model...

I'd wager that it is down to how the power usage is balanced on the SoC - the upper power and GPU clock limits are the same for both chips but the higher base clock on the Z3770 is presumably leaving less power headroom for the GPU to utilise...

As a device I think I prefer the T100 in all respects except for the screen - its a nicer size to hold as a tablet, I prefer the rounded back and its quite a bit lighter too. £430 for the Dell Venue 11 Pro + £160 for the laptop style dock is a lot of money too - at that point I'd look towards an original Surface Pro unless battery life is a major concern.

Guessing the screen would be pretty subpar in this..

The T100 screen? It's only 1368x768 (yes, 1368 - weirdly), but it is a decent quality IPS panel. Given the size of the device and the hit and miss nature of DPI scaling even in Windows 8.1 the resolution isn't entirely a negative tbh.

I agree on the screen, I previously had the ME400C which was same res, I found it more than adequate for everything I did on it, I sold it to get the T100 until I saw I couldn't get a 64gb one
