I can't remember motorway mpg, sorry.

After a map you will be looking at about 190 or 200bhp, depending whether the car has a k03 or k03s turbo, the latter being fit on later cars. My A3 was a 2001 and had a k03s.

I had mine on the rollers and it made 210bhp, also had a forge tip fitted too which helped.

If you get one go see badger 5, Bill is doing great things with the 1.8t unit!

I don't have an A3, I have an A4 1.8T (190) with a stage 1 map. I'm seeing similar mileage driving to work and back post map. Obvisouly if I use WOT it uses a bit more than previously.

On motorway runs, based on from my house to heathrow and back, I get 36mpg. Around town I can get 30-32mpg if I'm careful but in bad stop start traffic it can be down to 26-28mpg.

So far I've done about 2000miles in my A4 and I've run it on Shell V-power since I purchased it and my average is 31mpg overall.
 
Thanks for the info, I'll do the maths later but I suspect I may have to look for something with better fuel economy.
 
and so my epic quest for the A4 continues on xD I had a bit of a break from looking the past few weeks, with it being christmas and all... (spending time with the family and generally being lazy/gaming)

but now there are even fewer examples I like and the few that really do tickle my pickle are looking more around £18k-22k+ BAH!!!! :p I'll just keep looking and hoping :) have been thinking about going down the route of finance on something a bit more expensive but I've never liked the feeling of owing people money...especially if it going to be several hundred a month and the car is still technically theirs.... :\ hummmmm

(edit: think everyone bought up all the quattros for those 40 days of snow we were promised.... :rolleyes: )

So, my car is in with Audi today for the first "problem" I've had with it in 10 months.

My local dealership are telling me that a fluctuating coolant temperature gauge is "normal" on my car, and by fluctuating, I mean it can go from anywhere under half way up the gauge to almost zero in a space of 10-20 seconds.

The car is currently failing to warm up to a steady 90º, and will drop and rise temperature based on engine load and throttle used, this is also having a catastrophic effect on the fuel economy. My local dealer tells me that Audi suggest that the engines are so efficient, it might not properly warm up during even moderate to long journeys! Surely this is tripe? It goes against the information given in the handbook, and against known knowledge of the workings and mechanics of a typical engine cooling system. Surely the whole purpose of an engine cooling system is to maintain a constant, efficient working range. Turning off the climate control system does make the needle more stable, but it still continues to fluctuate, just less so.

I'm not happy to say the least.
 
Whilst that would potentially alleviate the problem, surely the (potential anyway) root of this is thermostat that's stuck open?

At least it has been on every other car I've ever experienced similar symptoms with?

funnily enough i have the same issue with my S5 V8. Dealer told me it was normal too, but im unconvinced. Its not having an impact on heaters and economy (lol) so ive not pushed it. Only been apparent since the cold weather started as the V8 produces some huge amounts of heat.

Last Audi got to 90deg and was rock solid at that.
 
strange :\ thought being "so efficient" might be a part of it, I do recall reading somewhere of someone having a similar problem of the engine taking forever to get up to temp and think it was put down to the rad being that good and the cold weather (plus climate control takes heat from the engine also?) and they did block off a bit of the rad and that sorted it :p

(may have even been in this thread? haha )

but still worth pestering about as it going from o-90 and up and down and up and down sounds iffy!
 
I wouldn't really question it if it were to only happen in "cold" weather, but it's 10.5c today, which isn't exactly unheard of in SUMMER in the UK.

They have point blank refused to do anything about it as (and I quote) "there are no errors showing".
 
heat wave up with you then? ;) good point though. just been to the one dealership? or tried consulting others?

if they are so certain that it's like that normally get them to give you "peace of mind" and take one of their cars out and see if it does the same. wonder what their tune would be to that....
 
Unsurprisingly, my courtesy car was a petrol A4 :(

I know that this isn't normal behaviour though, as I lived with my old 62 plate A4 (which was identical in all but colour and MMI version) over last winter and it never did this once.

My 62 Plate TDIe, doesnt do that either, temp is stable at 90c. So it does sound like a stuck open stat tbh.
 
hi audi owners :)

after some advise please, got about £6500 to buy a used A4 Avant TDI. seems this puts me on cars with 80-120k depending on spec (normal 130 sports lower miles for the price, s-line higher etc).

any advice for an audi newb? particular models to aim for and issues to look out for?
