Audi owners in here!

Exactly, that's why I chose the saloon...

An Audi A3 is an Audi A3, they are going to be everywhere because they are popular cars. If you want something thats 'not common' then pick something 'not common' because to most people, an A3 is an A3 (And not wanting something 'common' is generally about what others think, so what others think is relevant here).

it wont be common; at least for 6 months anyhow :p

It's quite common already the new a3 has been out over a year now I've had mine for 4 months and even around cornwall I've seen loads in the hospital I work, we have around 4 just here as they are cheap on nhs lease compared to any other car bar a fiesta.

ive seen a sum total of zero A3 saloons on the road. ive seen just the 1 and that was in an audi showroom! certainly not "loads"

Fox said a3 not not saloon or sport back which is why I said I've seen loads! It's gonna say a3 on the back regardless if it's a 5 door 3 door or saloon. Seen a few at the Audi garage ( saloon) certainly not special compared to a a4 or a5 rather have a a5 if I had to choose.

yeah and fox was replying to chriscatt who is looking at a saloon. nvr mind.

gotta agree that the A3 saloon is a gap which doesnt need filling, but it was never created for us Brits. The asian market LOVES saloon cars along with the US and im sure it will do very well.

For me, i think it looks pretty good and if i was in the market for a a4, id be definately test driving an A3 saloon as well. Just a pity you wont be able to get a 6 cylinder powerplant in it, so maybe S3 :)

Kinda makes the S3 more grown up in saloon form too. There no way id even consider a S3 hatch, but the S3 saloon would be OK..... still enjoying my S5 though :D

Hi, has anyone currently got an A5 3.0 tdi? I am looking to replace my E46 M3, so was wanting some opinions on the engine etc

i owned an a6 3.0 for a few years and have driven a few since with that engine. ive always thought it was the best of the normal audi engines. power is good, not epic. chippable. reliable enough engine and trans. Definately better mated to the auto tip box and quattro. i think both of those might be the only option on the 3.0. its even pretty quiet.

edit: my 3.0 returned about 33mpg over its life. commuting on A roads and B roads. avg 1 motorway trip a week (40mpg easily attainable). Also dont bother with the 2.7. its down on power to the 3.0 has the CVT box which isnt as good and the MPG is pretty much the same as the 3.0. basically pointless.

I am somewhat surprised by the mileage that our new A4 is achieving.
Granted my wife is doing most of the driving, so I can't be certain exactly how well things are being changed up and down, but the mileage seems much worse than predicted.

Urban cycle for the car was considered to be 56ish, with extra urban 70, and average around 60.
Much as I do not expect to achieve such results, I would have at least expected to get close.

First tank netted 39 average.
Second tank netted 43mpg average.
Maybe a period of time of getting used to driving a new car, but its a mix of town and a routes driving. 2.0L diesel engine, using that 'cut out at lights gubbins' etc.

Anyone found their car took a little bit of running it to achieve its mileage, as currently we're 30% below it, which seems a very large amount.

The figures are meaningless, they are obtained under lab conditions and do not involve real world driving. Did you honestly buy a large saloon car expecting 70 to the gallon out of it?

No, I certainly didn't but people with 3.0L cars are getting 40's so I'd have thought I'd at least get mid-40s.

Behind the figures 15-20% rather than 30.
I'll see what the actual tank mileage is like over Christmas, when I am doing most of the driving, and see what I get upon a long run, but at the moment the figures seem more than those expected for the remapped 170bhp rather than the 136bhp.

Well once it's snapped it doesn't take very long for the valves to start mashing into the pistons, you would have to take the head off to inspect for damage, check the valves and pistons then reassemble with new parts. If you are lucky you may just be looking at new valves and guides.

Dad has a 2001 A6 Avant 1.9TDI in Jaspice Green (slightly less common colour), and i'm thinking about getting an A3 8L as my next car.

Does anyone have anything to say about these? I would most probably be looking at the 1.8T Quattro if at all possible. Moving from a 2002 Polo 9N 1.2 so a bit of a step up in terms of comfort/performance etc. :)

There is also a part of me telling myself to hang onto the Polo for a bit longer until I can afford something a bit newer.

They are old not too refined, honestly my early 8P feels like a tank and it is quite a step up in all aspects from an 8L.

1.8t guzzles fuel for just 150hp, my 1.8t Passat used to cost me an absolute fortune to run.

I used to have an A3 T sport which had a stage 1 map, always thought it was pretty decent on fuel. IIRC around 30mpg around town was achievable, obviously depending on how it was driven!

Cheers 86JR, I might have a re-think and keep the Polo a little while longer. (though for what it is and how you have to drive it to get it rolling it isnt great on fuel anyway)

Any recollection of extra-urban/motorway numbers Dean? And what were the figures after the remap?

They are around 190hp after a map and around 5mpg less.

My mother still has a 163 TT roadster she gets around 30mpg too but has a really light foot, in my passat I don't know what I got, it cost me a tank and a half of fuel to drive from Swansea to Plymouth when I bought it! £10 would get me around 25 miles, silly mpg!
The 2.0t FSI a3 I owned later on in life had 260ish hp and £10 of fuel would get me around 40 miles, but petrol cost more + having to use vpower + my heavy foot.

Out of interest what is your budget? I have an 8p tdi, this does around 95 miles to £10 if i drive normally in automatic (dsg) you can pick them up for around 3k now. Mine might even be for sale soon unless I px it.
